No, this does not belong in E&O but this where my homies hang, yo. Mods, please indulge me by letting the thread hang out for a day or so. Pretty please with a clam on top? <*pitiful puppy-dog pleading eyes*>

ANYway, I will be in Sacramento, CA from April 12 until the 20th at the Lion's Gate resort. Big dog show shindig but, since I'm not bringing anything of my own to show, my time is my own. If any of ya'll are in the area, or could arrange to be in the area, I would love to grab some drinks and/or do some adventurous dining and/or sightseeing. Please PM me if you're up for it!

And the pinhead contingent is leaving tomorrow night (Thursday 4/10) for Phoenix, en route to (well, various places, including the Heard Museum, some gallery-hopping, and some poolside-margarita-slurping...but also) the Grand Canyon, where I'll be backpacking down from the South Rim to the Colorado (and, I hope, back up) Tuesday 4/15 through Sunday 4/20.

Dave Hawkins (aka afdave of kids4truth fame), it's still not too late for you to hitch a ride on my group's permit. You will need to arrange your own transportation to Phoenix and pack your own pack with food, clothing, tent, etc. Though some plan to get by with tarps (weather looks ideal) and sleeping under the stars.

Let's check out some sedimentary formations, dave!

Greetings to wolfhound (and eric?) in Sacramento.

Rent a car and take a day trip to Yosemite, approx 3 hrs away. You'll be glad you did. The spring thaws are happening and the waterfalls in the valley will be quite spectacular.

I'd be a tour guide, but I don't think Ms. Occam would appreciate me spending time with another tall, good looking, intelligent babe. :p

Bah, I won't be up at Carmel / Big Sur until the 25th-29th and I'm swamped now. :banghead: I really hope you have a good time, though, Wolfie.

Yet another excellent reason why there are "only" two sexes.

I second this. Yosemite is gorgeous in the springtime when the waterfalls are going full-bore. But, really, Yosemite is gorgeous any time of year. A lot of times you can get rooms in Yosemite Valley if you check a week ahead. The rooms are booked a year in advance, but people sometimes have to cancel due to unforseen circumstances. I've been lucky and scored nice accomodations at the last minute several times. Keep checking back every morning.

Oooooo! I'll have to see if this is doable. I might be able to get one of my friends from Florida who is driving <*Brrrrrrr*> and a real shutterbug to do this with me.

Hey, OA, invite Mrs. Occam along! I ain't THAT good looking, trust me. She shouldn't find me in the least jealousy-worthy. Unless you're tall, lanky, nice teeth, and pretty hands with long fingers.

Well, Sacramento is only an hour and a half from San Francisco. Even without a car, it's within the realm of possibility. :-)

Yeah, like several major airlines cancelling hundreds of flights, stranding tens of thousands of people.

(Crosses fingers, visualizes a smooth flight to the Grand Canyon.)

I have to fly quite a bit in my job. Early in my career I used to fly American, but after getting screwed (but not kissed) by them more times than I can count I told them to take their frequent flyer card and stick it. Doesn't surprise me one iota they were negligent on their FAA inspections.

Good luck on making the GC.

Absitvely posilutely get up there if you possibly can. I've done nearly every National Park west of the Rockies and a few East, most of the National Monuments and fair number of the various State Parks. Yosemite is still my favorite overall. It's not as Grand Canyon, and not as bizarre as Yellowstone, it doesn't have the highest mountains or the deepest gorge, but it is extraordinarily magnificent. It has a beauty that is just unmatched by anything. Serene, intense, stunning. It really does take the cake. The falls will be in pretty good flow, its still a bit early, beginning to mid May is usually the best. But it will still knock your socks off so be sure to wear some or there could be undesirable consequences. One place I really love is the trail up to Vernal Falls. Happy Isles, the trail along and above the Merced, the falls themselves.

But I warm you, it's addictive. It's the one big drawback to living in Hawaii. I use to go up there two or three times a year, for nearly 25 years. As a kid, my family went up there all the time. One of our favorites was to float done the river on air mattresses or innertubes. 7 miles of doing nuttin but looking at the valley go by. It'd take a couple of hours. Too cold for that now, but late summer its just fine.

It's also a hell of a lesson in geology. I think it was there that I first fell in love with study of the Earth.

Oh yeah, make sure you take a bit of a walk through the Ahwahnee Hotel, especially if you like National Park architecture. It's one of the Park System's jewels.
