I don't want to go into too many details, but a friend of mine from another discussion forum seems to have gone missing and I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas about what I could do to see if she's OK. She lives in one of the ex-Soviet states and was recently involved in some anti-government protests. Her internet access has been sporadic for a while, but a couple of weeks ago she showed up at the forum, apologising for being absent for a while, talking about things she wanted to do, and offering to take on some specific tasks involving mentoring. She told me by e-mail at around the same time that her phone and mail were being monitored but she thought, but wasn't certain, that her e-mail was secure. That was a month ago, and she hasn't been in contact by e-mail or at the forum since. Another member of that forum from the same country has been able to access the forum, so presumably internet access is available to an extent.
I seriously doubt, from several years of interacting with this person, that she's just decided to take a break from the forum and not bother to tell anyone. Which means she may be in trouble, but I don't know of any way to find out. Given the circumstances, I don't want to contact the embassy of her country or anything, but I was wondering if there are other ways of finding out if she's OK.
