View Full Version : Collective Nouns game

You have all heard of a "swarm of bees" or a "gaggle of geese", or maybe even a "murder of crows." There are several websites that have been collecting them.

How about our very own list of collective nouns. Can be of animals, plants, types of people, maybe even inanimate objects.

If you find one on one of the web sites that you really like, enter it here, but how about some original ones (and if it is an alliteration, it's even better)?

like:

a baramin of creationists
an orgy of ofros (just to nip that one in the bud)

Not original, but I always liked these two:

An exaltation of meadowlarks

A murder of crows

"trivia" nerd alert

Because of a phenomenal Gerald the Gorilla sketch on Not The Nine O Clock News the commonly accepted term for a group of baboons was actually changed from a troop or congress to include "a flange" and is now used interchangeably and even more commonly by most zoologists.

1) Responding to the 'shout out' to nerds, I must say that that video had me laughing out loud.

2) You gotta be kidding me about the renaming of the collective noun for a group of baboons. All because of this one skit? I had heard of a rumpus or a troop or a congress (now THAT'S appropriate) but a flange? WTF?

Holy crap! You're right, according to the OED of all damned things. Wow.
Thanks Matty. Would never have believed it.

Actually, I think a "Congress" of baboons was singularly appropriate. After all, either a "troop" or a "flange" might actually do something useful.

Methinks I actually prefer those that already existed to this one, raven ...

ravens An unkindness of ravens
ravens A conspiracy of ravens
ravens A murder of ravens
ravens A storytelling of ravens

Now, "murder" no doubt derives from "a murder of crows" even though a raven and a crow are not the same species of bird.

I might also add that I don't think I know of any "unkind" ravens (at least not in this company), so I could dump that one. But I think a "conspiracy of ravens" works, as does a "storytelling," and might even tie into your "quoth," even though it's a wee bit clumsy-sounding.
