Filipinos warned on crucifixions (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7305522.stm)

Health officials in the Philippines have issued a warning to people taking part in Easter crucifixion rituals. They have urged them to get tetanus vaccinations before they flagellate themselves and are nailed to crosses, and to practise good hygiene.

<snip>

In the hot and dusty atmosphere, officials warn, using unhygienic whips to make deep cuts in the body could lead to tetanus and other infections. And they advise that the nails used to fix people to crosses must be properly disinfected first.

The article talks about one man that has done this 14 times already to give thanks for his mother's recovery from tuberculosis. I can't grasp the thought process that leads someone to something like this. How could you worship a god that wants thanks in the forum of agonizing pain and suffering, over and over again?

So, if the nails are disinfected, it's all good. :rolleyes:

It reads more like something from The Onion or a Monty Python skit than real news. The article didn't even treat it as an odd thing to do, and mentions how it's a tourist attraction. That part is almost as weird.

SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING:

Nailing yourself to a tree is bad for your health.

Maybe it's my migraine, but reading that article made me feel more than a little nauseous.

:rolleyes:

If religious insanity was measured by proof like alcohol, what would this be? 180 proof? (And 200 proof would be having yourself stabbed by a spear, too.)

Rather a pity that the story didn't include a nail through the head, isn't it?

I watched this documentary on the "bloody easter" in the Philippines a couple years ago - it was interesting and sad. It looks like there's at least a bit of it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=B3UdQb-G_QI

This is old news in the Phillipines, but I kind of hope it catches on worldwide. It makes the insanity of Christianity all the more obvious.
