View Full Version : Guess the Ethnicity

Pages : [1] 2

This might be fun if enough people participate.

The title is kinda self-explanatory - someone posts a picture associated in some way with an ethnicity/nationality, whoever guesses it correctly continues. You can post pretty much anything you like: tools, art, people, food, ... if you can link to it without giving it away, even audio/video. Maybe don't make it language-based, since we already had a "guess the language" thread at IIDB (anyone up for a new round?).

Repetition is okay, as long as the clues are different enough. I would say no googling, but it's going to be difficult to google for items on pictures anyway, so I guess no googling unless everyone's stuck or something.

Let's begin:

Hahaha, ok, I was gonna guess Ket or Yukaghir, but it must be Ket.

Monad
09-22-2008, 09:30 AM
Well done - knew you'd get it - I gave too much away when I said the clue was "different language group" - geographically people were closer with the Asian/Siberians but not in terms of ethnicity and language - Ket is as rare if not rarer than Haida I think these days but is interesting because a case has recently been made for it to be part of the Na-Dene language group which may make the Ket a relic of the people's who speak Na-Dene and crossed over to the Americas (whether or not Haida is, is another controversy).

In fact Cornish was what I was looking for. The term is an anachronism as far as the people who made this object, but on the other hand it's uniquely part of the modern Cornish landscape.

Teshi gets the win.

The picture is from Parayar, but the group is Tamil, or so said the caption when I stole it.

They are from Rajapalayam which is in the Tamil Nadu state in India, Parayar is not a place but a social group based on caste status. The Parayars are a distinct social group with it's own history and traditions (as the second article I linked to goes into). The complication as I see it is what makes their social group distinct is the Indian caste system and centuries of "outcast" or "untouchable" status. So technically one may say they are Tamils by virtue of geography but socially and culturally they are distinct and would probably see themselves that way too (though note that might take different forms depending on their political views as much as anything as the fight against the caste system is also something that has long traditions). Whether that constitutes an ethnic difference I can't say - it's not an easy question - so in that sense I felt the answer was probably right enough (hence the "sort of").
