We've renamed the Trash Can to The Charred Remains, but I don't think that we've hammered out how we use it. Are we going to let people start topics there if they want to?

I like the idea of splitting off flames and letting them go on for a while down there to let them get it out of their system - maybe 24 hours or something? I don't really want to see them turn into one ongoing generic flame war. Maybe we could have a peanut gallery thread for people to rate the flames for originality, humor, or whatever to make them more entertaining.

What does everyone else think?

I'm possibly too IInstitutionalised, but I don't like the idea of flames that have been removed being left on public display. It's implicitly condoning hostile behaviour if they are left open.

My concept for the Trash Can / Charred Remains forum was for a similar purpose to '~E~' at II. That's not about flames, it's about threads with little content.

I'd be happy to let people start topics there if they want to - I never really saw the point of it being disallowed at II.

I like the idea of letting people start threads down there too. I don't have very strong feelings at this point about the flames, and I always reconsider things after hearing other opinions (not that I always change mine.)

I don't like doing edits of flames. I feel that splitting them to a forum for useless stuff is censure enough. At IIDB people didn't like their posts moved to ~E~ precisely because it was a public censure of sorts. Leaving the threads open for 24 hours or so may or may not give the combatants a chance to reach understanding, but it's worth a try.

I agree. I don't think it condones flames since they get split off to a separate area.

Yes, let people start threads there, and leave them open. If you don't give natural human reactions an outlet somewhere, they end up leaking out where you really don't want them.

By all means get the hose and shut down interminable fighting, but you can't expect people to always be calm and serene. People don't work that way. If they're pissed off, better to give them an outlet to rant as they need to, rather than forcing them to take it out on otherwise polite discussion.

There's a reason we have kidneys, and a reason why we have toilets instead of relying on diapers.

Agreed, with one exception. I'd like to have some way of disrupting bullying, perhaps by occasionally locking threads that have turned into lynchmobs.

Yep. Thus the hose.

Yep. Thus the hose.

So, what's the hose, in this context?

Locking thread and yelling at people :D

OK. Then I agree with your entire post.

It would be nice to limit the flame wars to the original people involved but that's too much work from an admin standpoint to enforce. If they turn into ongoing brawls that go beyond what the initial split was about, I'd want to yell at everyone and lock it at that point too.

I always flush the toilet. I don't think staff should have to spend much time and energy managing crap. I like the 24 hour thing.
