View Full Version : Popularity-contest polls?

There have been oodles of those over at IIDB, though I don't recall seeing any at RnR or HH or some other places that I visit. These have all been write-in polls, where people would write in the usernames of those that they'd buy beers for or whatever.

I bring them up because some people absolutely hate them. So what might we do with such polls? Send them to TCR? Invite their creators to conduct their polling at RnR? :)

I'm not bothered by such polls myself, though I've seldom gotten very many votes.

Some years ago at IIDB, I started the opposite sort of poll thread, one about the most infamous IIDBers. The mods didn't like it, and it didn't last very long.

But I like everyone , and just think you are all so intelligent, funny, helpful and obviously good-looking. I could never choose a favorite and your flaws just make you so human (overcoming frailities and limitations ) and highlight your strength of character. :D

Popularity contests are for middle schoolers.

I remember a thread 'say something nice about an IIDBer' that seemed like a nice thing to me at first, but after a while many of the comments were about the same people and others started to get upset. When it got to the point where some of us were getting accused of being in a 'cool kids' clique with people we barely knew I decided it wasn't such a nice thing after all. I personally don't care, but if people are going to get their feelings hurt or feel left out I hope that no one starts one. I'm a little uncomfortable about saying that they should be forbidden and I'd rather see everyone make fun of the person that starts it and deal with it through peer pressure.

Yep, that's for other boards, not here.

I think people's reactions are fucking ridiculous.

What, you can't admire a person in public, lest other people get jealous? Never mind middle-school, I thought that was for toddlers.

While we're at it, should we standardise all the welcome threads? After all, some people get far more attention than others...

Popularity polls are divisive and cliquish, and whilst I wouldn't go so far as to say we shouldn't have them here if people want them, I strongly hope we don't get in to them.

Well, high school sucked, so I'm going for cheerleader this time around!

I don't like that sort of poll myself, but I don't think we should be too restrictive of what other people might post.

I'd say TCR is the place for them, should they arise, though I'd rather they didn't.

What about "who would you sleep with?" polls?

Admiring someone in public isn't quite the same as a popularity poll.

RnR is the place. Not here.

No RnR is not. It seems much more suited to here. Look at the welcome threads for example. They are already such a thing, but without the raw numbers of a poll.

I agree that I can't picture those at RnR unless they were a joke.

I've been uncomfortable at times about the welcome threads because when people are joining fast it's easy to miss some, but I'm not sure that there's anything that we can do about it.

I know that if someone starts one I'm going to have a hard time not spamming it with what I had for lunch posts.

I don't really care about popularity polls. They're not my cup of tea but I'm not for trying to say that they shouldn't be done here.

I am not here to be popular. I'm here to interact with others, and not all the time will they agree with my point of view. Nor I with theirs.

It seems to me that those lists of who has the most rep are very close to a popularity poll.

Not really. I have a lot of rep, but I am not very popular.

I have no problem with allowing them, but I don't see them fitting into any area except TCR. Maybe the Lounge -- not sure about that one.

The threads in Intros are on-topic. The whole point is to welcome people here and tell them that you like them. If you do. Yeah, it's a little banal, but it's only meant to be the front door at TR. Folks are expected to wander off into the various rooms.

ETA: But if they turn into places for people to abuse posters, then they violate the guideline about not disrupting the community. So if they go to the Lounge, they should be watched to be sure they're not doing that.

You might not be popular here, but you're definitely popular at RnR.

I just want to say that as the first one to think 'oh fuck' when he showed up, I've changed my opinion completely. The one on RnR makes me nervous and the one here is interesting. I don't think he's unpopular here for anything about here if he is at all.

I think Pavlov's Dog is often misunderstood. He's a lawyer and he likes to argue. Sometimes people take things a little too personally.

Fighting just makes me nervous. I really don't get why differences of opinion get people so angry. But I sure as hell don't want to talk about it now anymore : )

I don't know why I said that but I felt like admitting that I was pretty much wrong from only reading certain threads.

Blech, popularity threads. :yuck:

Being a high school student myself, I deal with the real life equivalent of such drivel everyday.

I personally will not support anything here that makes another member feel unwelcome. We're all on equal ground as human beings, and in that manner everyone should remain equalized, with no one better or publicly more liked than the other.

Did you ever see the South Park episode, when the boys found out that the girls had a hottest guy poll?

I don't avidly watch that show, because of the lowbrow humor (prefer British television myself). :o

However, I did see that episode, and I know what you're trying to say.

Looks don't matter for the most part though, David B. It's what's on the inside that counts. :)

Not really. I have a lot of rep, but I am not very popular.Yeah, it's unlikely that anyone in the top 10 in terms of rep ever gets elected mod or would do well in a "most liked user" poll.

I'm not sure what is meant by popularity polls. You aren't talking about rep contests so what exactly are you talking about? Is it akin to senior superlatives? LIke "TR member you most want to have a beer with"?

I still don't see the difference between "Welcome Oolon! -> Orright! -> Holy fuck, Oolon is here! -> Oolon! This place is getting GREAT!", etc, and "Welcome, Joe Random User! -> Hello."

Different people are differentially liked. Life's just like that. Expecting people to pretend otherwise seems fundamentally dishonest to me.

You might not be popular here, but you're definitely popular at RnR.

I guess that depends on what you consider popular. A handful of posters on RnR like me, but most people on that board do not.

Rathpig is a cool chick. I would damn sure buy her a beer. In fact, I have bought her several million beers, and she gets more popular with me the more beer she drinks.

Rathpig is a pretty cool guy, eh is a terrorist, and doesn't afraid of being nice to theists.

Oh, and I sleep with Rathpig every chance I get.
