eMusic just added all the Rolling Stones records (http://www.emusic.com/artist/The-Rolling-Stones-MP3-Download/11661667.html) up to Let It Bleed (1969). (Also some collections, such as Hot Rocks and boxed sets and rarities.) My question is, what are the best pre-1969 Stones records to get? And/or, what are the ones to avoid, if any.

Sympathy for the Devil is simply their best tune, IMO.
Paint it Black, Mama kin and most of the 'Salt of the Earth' (??) album. I'm not a huge Stones fan myself, but there is some genius in there.

I like Mother's Little Helper. It's about housewives using valium. Puck like valium a lot when I was a kid so I guess I can relate.
My favorite Stones song is Spider And The Fly. Probably just because my Dad sang it and I loved most of the music he performed.

I can't see the albums listed on your link, instead I get this message.
We're sorry. The albums by this artist are unavailable for download in your country (Canada) at this time.
Some of my favorites pre 1969 are:
Let It Bleed
Beggars Banquet
Aftermath
Between The Buttons
Their Satanic Majesties Request
December's Children
I'm a huge Stones fan and have been for a long time.
I suggest you buy all of them.:D

Well, that stinks. Yeah, somebody on emusic's messageboard mentioned they were only available in the U.S.
Thanks, CN. I'll take that list and start downloading. Except for Between the Buttons and December's Children, those albums are labelled as picks on emusic, which means somebody there likes them, too.
What's Their Satanic Majesties Request like? That one seems to get mixed reviews. Of course I know the song She's a Rainbow, which IIRC has a lot of flutes and other pastoral and acid-y flourishes to it. Is the whole record like that?

Always liked that one.

Paint It Black is on Aftermath, and Salt of the Earth is on Beggar's Banquet. What is Mama Kin? Never heard of it.

Yeah, that's a good one. It's on Aftermath, I see.

That's on Out of Our Heads, which nobody mentioned yet, so I may check that one out as well.
With my subscription rate, I can get each song for 30 cents, and popular artists have a way of disappearing from emusic, so I'm probably going to snatch these up ASAP.
Thanks, Thalia, WT, and CN!

Yeah, that album is different, acid-y as you put it.
Another song from that album you might recognize is 2000 Light Years From Home.

Beggar's Banquet is in my opinion one of the best music recordings of all time.
I am not really a Rolling Stones "fan" either, but that CD stays in my rotation. The mixture of genres on the album is amazing.

Actually, now that I think about it, Mama Kin is an Aerosmith song that rarely gets airplay...I have it on the same mix CD as a bunch of my Stones...disregard (although it's still a cool song).

I think Beggars Banquet is a fantastic album, but I enjoy Exile on Main St. a whole lot more.
Only Stones song I like is Shattered.

So evidently, I'm forever prohibited from complimenting the Stones without impunity?
Jerk. :p
p.s. Don't think it was lost on me that you put up a tube of that fellow on the uke playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

Alright. That's fair enough, I suppose. Perhaps I'm still a bit raw over our row over Beatles v. Stones. So, I'll retract my fangs for now, but rest assured, I will maintain vigilance. :P

Ooo, that sounds fun! Must have missed the argument: I'd plump very much for Beatles. :p
So, I'm a casual fan of the Stones, but did like Beggars Banquet: another vote for that album. However, the Forty Licks compilation was enough for me, at least for now. Once I've got through my various 80s to-buy (which at the mo is lots of Madonna), I'll have to remember to start looking at some more 60s stuff too (which in my CD collection is mostly compilations, Beatles, Kinks, Small Faces, some soundtracks and lots of soul).

The only one I ever bought was Sticky Fingers. Is that too late? Why do you want pre 1969?
My fave single is Ruby Tuesday.

Those are the only ones I can get on emusic.com. Since I posted the OP, I've downloaded several of their albums. Ruby Tuesday is on one of them. I like that song, too.
