Nothing's perfect. But ime and imo, the only thing worse than belonging to a union is not belonging to a union. Look at what successful anti-union propaganda in the US has done to American workers' rights in the past decade alone.

It is that simple, in that workers can directly change the behaviours of their unions by voting behaviour and in other ways. For example, in the early 80s, head offices of CUPE were shut down by a walkout of the mostly women secretaries, assistants, etc, in protest of unequal pay. The small workforce I was part of was at the time negotiating with CUPE to become a part of that union, and our rep, an old style union guy, explained the situation with deep shame, as it was slowing down our process. With widespread support of the women from union membership, CUPE quickly got off their asses and did the right thing.

At any time the teachers' union members could have done the right thing, and insisted on a more ethical use of their dues. That they did not may have more to do with apathy, ignorance, or greed than 'unions'.
