The story itself, of a culture clash between the Jarawa tribe and the Indian government over the killing of a 5-month-old baby, is tragic and complicated. It is the sort of ethical dilemma anthropologists often deal with, using principles such as cultural relativism: the idea that people acting within a culture have to be understood in relation to that culture, rather than in relation to another one. That is, understanding the actions of the Jarawa requires understanding the rules of their culture. Yet they are living within a geopolitical area controlled by India, which has its own cultural rules that conflict with those of the Jarawa. And cultural relativism does not necessarily equate to moral relativism. A tricky piece like this requires discussion with experts, but it seems no anthropological expertise was sought.

There is no easy answer here. No anthropologist would tell you definitively what to do in this situation.

If the anthropologists quoted don't want to substantially adress the allegation of cultural infanticide, then I think it's a mistake to address the NYT article all. At least I would not get a much different impression of the NYT article if all the other stuff were corrected, but the basic report of likely rape by an outsider, doctor checkup, and infanticide, and implication that this is some kind of cultural infanticide rather than a single occurrence, were left intact.
