I've added an addendum to the OP you'll probably want to read.

Your three character choices will be assumed in your order of preference: 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd Choice.

Does that mean first come first serve for top character picks, or is it random who gets the disputed character?

eta actually maybe it would be better to do random.

Though the calculus of character picking for players as the sign up list expands could be interesting!

I'm open to discussion on this important matter.

Ahh. Well, my PM is more or less in order of preference anyway.

Actually... First on my list is my first choice. Second is my third choice. Third is my second choice.

Well I want my first choice and I got it in early so I vote first come, first serve

Overall I think you should go for the solution that leads to the least number of people getting their third pick. If someone loses out on their first pick, they should be favoured to get their second.
