Hey, I just thought.
We all have our own preconceptions. What about the idea that in each sub segment of the whole thing votes are disabled for a day or so or three, to allow proponents of each guitarist to post youtube vids, and make a case for their choice, and against others, before people can vote without looking at the evidence presented. For instance, re Chet and Les Paul I might post this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByGsH...eature=related In order to suggest that both have pinched a lot of Django, while missing out on his sheer musicality, let alone his virtuosity. Hello all!
Thought I'd join the fun here for this guitar showdown! Some of you may know me as dostfez over at IIDB where I often took part in music threads. Anyway looking forward to this as my old friends Hook and Matty! are running the show. I see Hook waited until all the guitarists were picked before inviting me over. A quick perusal of the list looks pretty good....with some exceptions...hehehe. No Lenny Breau? Possibly one of the most gifted jazz players the planet ever knew? No Buddy Guy?, or Otis Rush? or Freddie King? or Albert Collins for blues? BUT John Lee Hooker of all people is in and Muddy Waters? No one thought Randy Rhoads was good enough for the metal crowd, but err...Ted Nugent (rocker though he be) is in? No Paco Pena for flamenco? Where is Shawn Lane for the tasteful shred crowd? (which in itself is a major accomplishment)..but Yngwie is in? No John Renbourn or Phil Keaggy for the folky crowd? PRINCE!!!???? Where the hell is Buckethead??? No Tony Rice or ANY bluegrass guys? I'll complain more later...heheh. HEHEHEH...aren't you glad you invited me now Hook? Good god it's nice to bitch for once as opposed to the other way round when I run these things! |

Bootsy/Dos, about time you made it over here, I invited you over when this place was first set-up.
Yeah some surprising exclusions, but then Matty and I tried to limit our input, most of the guitarists I nominated were just to get some genres like classical and country on. |

Right sorry for the absenteeism, heavy weekend and all that. Thatnks for sorting out the draw Hook, i shal post round one immediately.
I suggest this as a format (very similar to Dostfez's IIDB GB thread). Each round is left open for a total of 48hrs, with a new round opened each day (max 2 rounds open at any given time). I will post the close date in the thread title. Each person gets two votes. Vote FOR your top two guitarists in any group and if you feel so inclined, tell us which you chose and why in comparison to the rest of the group. VOTE FOR YOUR TOP TWO. This was the most common sticking point previously, people giving the "Oh damn i accidentally voted for Brian May when i clearly meant to vote against him. can we scrub that" so please make sure you remember to VOTE FOR YOUR TOP TWO. OKay, let no one say they werent warned . I would also suggest that toward the end, rather than boiling it all down to 4 finalists, we have an 8 finalist free for all with each person allowed to vote for their top three. Just a suggestion, thoughts appreciated. ETA: Dostfez/Bootsy , YAY. Welcome welcome welcome,. we were just waiting till you got here. ETA2: Yeah i have come critical concerns over some of the people included but i will save my usual tactful and respectful critiques for once the comp has kicked off.

Really, is anybody else as good as Al Di Meola?
Some of the others listed are better showmen, but as far as skill goes most of the nominees don't compare. (Well, there are actually a couple of other greats listed, like John McLaughlin.)

Dimeola is in a tough group, Ry Cooder, Satriani and Hazel. I'll give Al the edge for chops but Cooder for musicality. Satriani overall might be more rounded than either. That is going to be a tough battle. |

I am glad he was able to keep touring up until mid 07, despite his age.
He left a great legacy. Just realized, in reading, that my fave Bowie song, Panic in Detroit, has the Bo Beat. How many Dead shows have you left while the audience claps that beat as Not Fade Away was the last song played?
