way too sensible, next you'll be suggesting america gets rid of farenheit
What would make sense in that case is to just use the scientific names would we want that sort of precision in day to day language. Otherwise I have to laugh that even the BBC has to clarify "European elk". Just moose it up and be done with the confusion

More taxonomic confusion (moose related)
i will call them moose if you will stop calling wapiti elk DO WE HAVE A DEAL
I can live with this.

Can you live with calling reindeer caribou?

You forgot the Mule Deer. Nice whitetail buck, though.

these were likely derived from moosu, meaning "he strips off"),
What I got out of this is that moose are male strippers.
I have yet to see one strip. All the moose I have seen have been nude.

That's a Caribou. However, the domesticated ones in northern Europe are called reindeer. They are unusual among deer in that both males and females have antlers (It's just the males that have antlers in most deer species).

At first they have "velvet" on their antlers, but then they show everything.

it's kinda hard to want to reintroduce cougars and grizzlies when you know what yhey look like up close.

They keep talking about reintroducing the grizzlies in the north cascades. I'm not sure if maybe the dfw proposed it or sierra club sort of thing. And as far as cougars, never forget: Dan and Ann.

Testy, no re-introduction is necessary.

They've been there all along.

The Park Service/Forest Service has just been keeping their presence quiet to avoid overblown panic reactions like, well, like ...

My father had two Walkers he named Dan and Ann as a tribute to WTRFG. Ann was a fine hunter, but Dan had a penchant for chasing deer (which brings us back on topic).

As long as they don't have reins.

I kind of like the notion of re-wilding, but I have to pause when it involves critters that might want to eat me.

I'm not sure de-extinction is a practical notion considering that we aren't doing a very good job preserving the creatures we still have, but it would be pretty cool if someone could clone a mammoth.

For me, the key think is more about ensuring that the ecosystem can support a decent level of self-sustainable biodiversity, rather than introducing specific species. I don't see the point of re-introducing a species if it means a constant effort to maintain its population in the environment (to stop it either exploding or collapsing)

Yeah, this is the rationale for reintroducing buffalo to Banff. They clear a lot of underbrush and open space that then permits greater biodiversity of the more marginal woodlands type. I personally can't wait until its a reality.

It was also the rationale behind reintrodicing wolves in yellowstone. They hid near the rivers and streams and the elk stopped destroying the riparian zones.

Wolves did really well there. Ranchers regardless.

I get it, that's excellent. It reminds me of something similar that a lady I know is working on in Exmoor, where they are reintroducing the wild ponies - they keep the grass and such down and help to maintain various habitats in the area
