Default Merle Haggard, Country Music Legend, Dies at 79

Link
Quote:
Country legend Merle Haggard, often called “the Poet of the Common Man,” whose music reflected his hardscrabble roots and hard-living ways as well as a tenderness that made him a revered songwriter, has died at his home near Redding, Calif. He was 79.

The Associated Press confirmed his death.

Haggard along with fellow Bakersfield, Calif., superstar Buck Owens defined the West Coast sound of country music in the 1960s and ’70s.

I remember it as the odious anti-anti-war anthem.
But I heard on the PBS News Hour obit that he later turned anti-war himself.

Even at the time, my impression was more that Merle was sticking up for his subculture more than for the war.

It was satire, kind of making fun of people like the song is talking about, but in a sympathetic way.

Still a grit-your-teeth song.

I liked Merle though. Sad to see him go.

Try "Fightin' Side of Me.' Even worse. Of the rest though none were bad.
