Prince’s Emergency Plane Landing in the Week Prior to His Death Due to an Overdose of Percocet

More details have emerged about the medical emergency Prince suffered in the week prior his death. According to TMZ, Prince’s overdose and subsequent hospitalization in Moline, Illinois, last week was brought on by his use or overuse of Percocet, an opioid combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. The singer was allegedly “unresponsive” during his plane’s emergency landing, which called ahead with a report concerning an "unresponsive male" aboard. Prince was subsequently treated in the airport by emergency medical personnel who administered an opiate antidote, or “save shot.” After being hospitalized for three hours, Prince left to return to Paisley Park in Minnesota. The singer's autopsy is scheduled to be performed today.

Report: Prince Was Treated for a Drug Overdose Roughly One Week Before His Death

When the late Prince was hospitalized in Illinois six days ago, according to TMZ, he was treated for a drug overdose. "Multiple sources in Moline tell us, Prince was rushed to a hospital and doctors gave him a 'save shot,'" the site writes, "typically administered to counteract the effects of an opiate." (TMZ's update is not an official cause of death, and Prince's reps have yet to respond to it — they initially said he was battling a flu.) Prince then left for Minnesota three hours later because he couldn't get a private room, though doctors reportedly wanted him to stay for a full 24. His body was discovered in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate early Thursday.

Variety has published portions of the morning's 911 transcript: "People are just distraught," says an unidentified caller. "I don’t know [how Prince died], I don’t know." The Carver County Sheriff's Office told the media that it is still investigating the situation, and that a local medical examiner will conduct an autopsy.

Update: Last week's medical emergency was reportedly tied to Percocet, an opioid combo of acetaminophen and oxycodone used to treat moderate to severe pain. TMZ notes Prince had been using the medication for a hip problem, which stemmed from a previous corrective surgery. The singer's autopsy will be performed today.

Authorities found Prince unresponsive in an elevator when they arrived Thursday morning, responding to a 911 call. First responders tried CPR, but were unable to revive the pop star and he was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Prince’s death. His autopsy will be performed on Friday.

The Carver County Sheriff’s Office also released the transcript of the 911 call that an unidentified male made to report Prince’s death. The caller said the people at the house were “distraught,” and said he didn’t know how Prince died.
