Well, Bernie finally won a closed primary. If only he'd been able to do that a month ago, this might still be a race.

Looking at the county map, it's kind of crazy how close this race has been to North vs. South. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons for that, but it's pretty striking:

no, this is a legitimate point. "winning states" is irrelevant in a proportionally allocated primary. the only thing that matters is margin of victory. if that is not high enough to meaningfully close the gap with your opponent, you're still losing.

it's normal and reasonable for commentators to point out that a campaign trying to make a comeback is not closing the gap fast enough to win.

If only those shit posters had read the nuanced analysis of Nate Silver. Surely they would come to their senses.

Everyone in the media tracks these as state to state battles, as well as the candidates themselves. And since elections are about persuading people to vote one way or the other the state outcomes become a part of the persuasive argument. When the media uses this mode of tracking electoral success it looks like a biased back pedaling to add this "but they're all white", "but they're really trump voters", "but it won't matter" disclaimer nearly every time one candidate wins. There is clearly a substantive basis for the last one but it's hard not to notice that they started this narrative after New Hampshire, way prior to when it was legitimate.

so everyone in the media tracks these "as state to state battles" or the media uses "this mode of tracking electoral success" with disclaimers?

nonetheless, "he's still losing because he did not make sufficient gains" is a legitimate point because tracking the campaign by states "lost" and "won" is dumb af

the entire idea is absurd that, amongst people in the political junkie bubble, it is somehow unfair, inaccurate, misleading, etc. to write or pass around analysis that we willingly eat up in just about every other context. which was the point of gunner's nate silver joke a few weeks ago about selectively appreciating that brand of commentary.

indeed. when a week ago you have "he needs to win every remaining state by 18 points" or whatever*, it is perfectly legitimate to say "well, he did not do that, the course of the primary has not changed."

eta * which people also bitched about because apparently that is not fair punditry
