how much political rhetoric do you actually listen to, when things like "my America" come up? there is almost always an air of exclusive ownership whenever people say "my America." President Obama should never be president of my America, I want to take my America back (as if it were an item or commodity stolen from them), etc. it is within the context of a larger group, but it's always attached to a deeply personalized, individualistic feeling of ownership over "America." sometimes this is conflated with a more corporate "we need to take our America back" but almost always it switches back to referring to the individualistic idea.

but then again, i'm not really concerned about the use of "my America" within American society, because we're not a democracy ('least federally.) to my broader point, individualizing these normally public spaces and ideas has no useful place in a democracy. if i went into a worker co-op and decided to start saying that i wanted "my co-op" to do things a certain way, i'd be ostracized pretty goddamn quickly. the point of democracy is that it is a communal thing. the park down the road isn't "my park," it's "our park"..."our" being the community i'm apart of.
