I know it can 'all be done with mirrors' and such, but somehow I struggle with the idea of Stephen Fry as a hobbit. If he were just voicing him, no probs, but he's always going to be a Big Bloke™ somehow.

If we're into off-the-wall casting, I reckon Eddie Izzard would be pretty good.

How about Andy Serkis? He's a great actor.

It can reprise his earlier role and double as the earlier Gollum, too.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's already accepted the role. Gollum's voice is damn hard to imitate (well, that is).

According to the NZ Herald, number 1 choice for Bilbo is James McAvoy (spelling?). That would be interesting - he was the best thing about The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I hope he agrees!

James McAvoy is a very good young actor, but I have a hard time picturing him as the pudgy, middle-aged Bilbo from the early part of The Hobbit.

Bilbo turned out to be pretty tough, but he didn't seem that way at the start.

^He'd have to put on a bit of weight, that's for sure. But I was really impressed with him as Mr. Tumnus (he was light years ahead of the BBC version).

And he's not Jack Black, of course, who was also mentioned as being in the running, as was (I can't believe this one) Daniel Radcliffe. That had better be just a rumour.

Great actor. If you are a fan and get chance to watch a brit series called Shameless, you should, he is awesome in season 1-3.
