Tough group, I am tempted to go Fripp and Kotke but I can't deny the influence of Page and Van Halen.
Page almost made up the virtuoso guitar hero in a band, and Led Zeppelin was the template for hard rock, heavy metal etc. until Van Halen. I am not a big VH fan but I have to give credit, any guitarist from his debut on had to acknowledge his influence even though their style might have been completely different. Without Eddie providing a new popularity of virtuoso guitar playing that was light years ahead of anything anyone had heard of at the time , Malmsteen might not have been able to show up with just a Stratocaster in North American and hit it big and Satriani and Vai might not have been able to put out solo instrumental guitar recordings. ......decision deferred for now. |

I've listened to all four.
I don't want to be harsh, but, sod it, why the hell not. Fripp - I prefer my music to sound a bit less like those relaxing cd's that new agy chicks play while giving aromatherapy. Van Halen - I don't care how good a virtuoso a guy is, if what he uses his virtuosity for doesn't seem musical to me. Page - well, even though Led Zep seem to me a hollow copy of Cream, he is a pretty good guitarist. Krottke I'd never heard before Seemed pretty good. So I will be going with the last two. David B
