Here in Bavaria, too, St. Nicholas, usually clad as a bishop and sometimes accompanied by evil "Knecht Ruprecht" = servant Rupert (obviously of pagan origin) who chastises the bad kids, brings small presents.

The big loot comes in the evening of Dec 24 and is brought by Baby Jesus.

Up north, St. Nicholas is not worth mentioning and a nondescript "Weihnachtsmann" = Christmas man brings the presents in the evening of Dec 24.

Dec 21 is solstice/Yule/Tohji-Tasai/etc., as well as my anniversary ♥.

Dec 23 is some stuff that Old Dan already mentioned upthread, plus the Heisei Emperor's birthday (in Japan) and Joe Smith's birthday (for Mormons).

For Zoroastrians, Dec 26 is a day to commemorate the death of the prophet Zoroaster/Zarathustra.

Kwanzaa is Dec 26 to Jan 1.

Christmas is, of course, the next Catholic liturgical season after Advent, and it consists of the 12 days from Dec 25 through Jan 5. The 4th day is set aside in honour of the "Holy Innocents" allegedly massacred on the orders of Herod, the 6th day is "Holy Family" day, and the 8th day (Jan 1) is both a day to emphasize Mary's role as "Mother of God" and a day to remember the circumcision of babby Jesus. The 10th day is for getting all excited about the name Jesus.

In Catholicism, Jan 6-13 is sort of an appendage to the Christmas season, and Jan 14 marks the beginning of the year's first (and shorter) period of "Ordinary Time", which ends with the start of Lent. (Prior to Vatican II, there was other stuff between Epiphany and Lent, and it wasn't part of "Ordinary Time".)

The Chinese new year is often described as the 2nd new moon after the December solstice, but that isn't really correct. It's actually the last new moon before the point in the earth's orbit that's 60 degrees past the solstice. So on rare occasions it can be the 3rd new moon after the solstice.

Chinese months go from new moon to new moon.

Normally, the months of the year are
1. The one containing the point that's 60 degrees past the December solstice
2. The one containing the March equinox
3. The one containing the point that's 30 degrees past the March equinox
4. The one containing the point that's 60 degrees past the March equinox
5. The one containing the June solstice
6. The one containing the point that's 30 degrees past the June solstice
7. The one containing the point that's 60 degrees past the June solstice
8. The one containing the September equinox
9. The one containing the point that's 30 degrees past the September equinox
10. The one containing the point that's 60 degrees past the September equinox
11. The one containing the December solstice
12. The one containing the point that's 30 degrees past the December solstice

Those 12 orbital points are, on average, further apart than the length of a lunar month. So you can get a month without one of those orbital points in it. That's how an intercalary month happens.

But near the perihelion (in January), when the earth is moving faster, it's remotely possible for a lunar month to contain two of those orbital points. In that case the rule is (a) that the month containing the December solstice is always month 11, and (b) the months before or after month 11 are shifted, up to the point where a month that would normally have been intercalary is filled in by one of the regular month designations.

Example: Suppose we have a month containing the month-11 and month-12 orbital points, and we also have a month tucked conveniently between the one with the month-2 orbital point and the one with the month-3 orbital point. Then instead of making the latter an intercalary month, we'll call it month 2, while the month with the month-2 orbital point will be month 1, and the one with the month-1 orbital point will be month 12. So in that case the new year begins slightly after the point 60 degrees past the solstice -- and the usual summary (2nd new moon after the solstice) is more correct than my alleged correction in post #264.

Lots of new year celebrations coming up.

Buddhism: One of my sources says April 6 is the new year for Therevada Buddhists. Another source mentions Songkran / Thingyan / Pi Mai Lao on April 13-15 -- the new year for many S.E.Asian Buddhists. And at least some of those are Therevada, so I don't know whether I should see this as a contradiction or not.

Hinduism: One source puts the new year on April 11, which is also the start of a ten-day thingy called Ramayana. Other sources don't mention it. I think several of my sources are crap, but I don't know which ones.

Apr 11 is "Akshaya Tritiya" for the Jains. Is that a new year thing too? No idea. But I would expect them to have at least a few holidays in common with the Hindus.

Apr 14 is Vaisakhi, the Sikh new year. From a couple of sources, anyway.

And in other news, our Jewish buddies have Yom HaShoah (genocide remembrance day) on April 7, and Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israeli independence day) on April 15.
