NES/emu nerds: Dragon Warrior 3 question

i cleaned out the pyramid but couldn't remember the damned secret part and didn't find anything in-game. so i looked up some maps that told me all about the secret staircase in the basement.

what's bugging me is that google is clogged up with several thousand walk-thru guides but not one damned word about how you were actually supposed to figure that out in game. i know for a fact i figured this shit out in '91 but i just don't have that level of patience anymore. anyone remember how the hell you're "supposed" to figure that out?
