The Great Sausage Debate

http://answersingenes.blogspot.com/2...-sausages.html

Or is a sausage filled with chicken really a sausage?

We in Africa don't always see it that way.

re the OP: That blog post is witty enough, sure. But is it fair? Where are the examples of philosophers behaving in a way analogous to that?

The analogy is not correct. A true philosopher would never build an actual sausage machine; he would just describe it conceptually with conceptual sausages and all.

The philosophers would have a virtual sausage fest with that one.

What is this even an analogy for? I'm not sure what philosophy's opponents imagine the real life analogue of this machinery is, or what philosophical sausages they think it would make if it were working right. Actually, people who make arguments like the OP don't seem to understand why people do philosophy or what it is.

ETA: For that matter, every time I've ever had a conversation with someone demanding to know what the practical fruits of philosophy are, they've just refused to accept that any of useful byproducts you can list are actually philosophy. The people who look around for these practical gains just cry No True Philosopher when you point out how valuable philosophical projects like first-order logic have turned out to be.

"And I demand that I am Vroomfondel!" shouted the younger one.

Majikthise turned on Vroomfondel. "It's alright," he explained angrily, "you don't need to demand that."

"Alright!" bawled Vroomfondel banging on an nearby desk. "I am Vroomfondel, and that is not a demand, that is a solid fact! What we demand is solid facts!"

"No we don't!" exclaimed Majikthise in irritation. "That is precisely what we don't demand!"

Scarcely pausing for breath, Vroomfondel shouted, "We don't demand solid facts! What we demand is a total absence of solid facts. I demand that I may or may not be Vroomfondel!"

"But who the devil are you?" exclaimed an outraged Fook.

"We," said Majikthise, "are Philosophers."

Science involves basic philosophy skills (reasoning, argumentation, logic, deduction, induction, observation). Data without interpretation is not useful. Interpretation that cannot be backed up with argumentation is also not useful. A philosopher who rejected experimentation when it was readily available would indeed be foolish, but like Brother Daniel brought up, I'm not sure that's actually happening.

Did your question really exist? How do you know?

It may have been a figment of your imagination, possibly a hallucination.

Are you on any medication?

Well there are some real problems with that.
An all natural chicken product is a chicken, not a sausage. No chickens naturally become sausages.

I find your argument to be flawed.

That's 'cause yer basin' yer own point in a logical fallacy, miss.

Ya said "No chickens naturally become sausages." That's true. I counter that there aint no meat whatsoever, not pork, nor beef neither, that can naturally become sausage.

Since all sausage is unnatural, and done gotta be made by hand, then it's entirely possible to make chicken sausage, y'hear?

Never heard of chicken.
