Well, cats are carnivores whether you like it or not. One spring my father counted over 50 episodes of young rabbits brought into the house, but only 20 were dead or dying. The other 30 were live rabbits that their cat would just kind of "drop" when he presented the prize to him. And off runs the baby rabbit under the bookcase; and the cat begins his pursuit again. Many times house cats don't 'hunt' but 'play'. It's like sport fishing, it's all about the thrill of the catch but you release the prey if they're still alive.

But cats don't accept failure too well ....

My current cat has brought home several half grown rabbits, but they were dead and he ate them. Last cat brought home full grown rabbits now and then. Took him several days to eat them, and he would conceal the bodies with scratched up dry grass.

Current cat does not like eating birds, occasionally catches and releases them in the house. I've had some interesting chases. Birds flying around indoors can be hard to catch without hurting them. Cat just watches, disgusted with my hunting skills, I'm sure.

If I get a bird inside (due to open screen doors, not due to cats) I just open everything possible and sorta herd them out again. Don't need to actually catch them.

Oh, I open all the doors and windows and try to herd them, but they exhaust themselves quickly and end up sitting on the curtain rods or fluttering around banging themselves up on the furniture. It may be the house layout or something.

but about 3-4 of the baby bunnies were alive yet

took care of them for a few weeks, and let them go a few miles away when they were big enough

Soul-crushin'. First, screamin and cryin, then findin the bag and a lot more screamin and cryin. The kittens were named Jack and Spot, and we only had 'em fer a few months... later on down the road, we reused the names on other pets; we got a dog and named him Jack, then rescued a street cat with spots on her, so we named her Spot. Both in honor of the original Jack and Spot, yall.

Cat breeds don't get the attention that dogs do.

But breeds are still big business. Cat types and traits have huge variety.

Royal Mail threatens to halt deliveries to home of mail-snatching cat

Quote:
A couple have been told to restrain their cat or face having their mail deliveries suspended.

Matthew Sampson said he was notified by the Royal Mail last week of a “potential hazard” at his home in Patchway, near Bristol, which was affecting deliveries. According to a letter sent to Sampson by the Royal Mail, four-year-old Bella was a “threat” to staff.

In the letter, the Royal Mail said it had been experiencing difficulties in delivering mail to Sampson’s home “because of the actions of a cat”. The postman had reported that when he pushed mail through the letterbox, a black and white cat “snatches the mail and puts his fingers at risk of injury”.

The couple have been advised to “restrain their cat at all times” or provide an alternative “safe” post box, or deliveries would be suspended.

Sampson told the BBC: “We’ve noticed over the last couple of days that the postman is very hesitant at putting the letters in, and Bella thinks it’s a game that he’s trying to play.

“I haven’t seen her put her paws all the way through, but I think it’s fair what they’re saying – it’s just how they’ve worded the letter. As to restraining the cat, I’d no way dare.”

Sometimes our cat hides in the bushes right outside the front door and refuses to come in. I try to pick him up, and he starts pawing at me with his claws extended. Fuck that, he can stay outside.
