Pretending that humans and cats are identical is dumb. Most cats can live perfectly happy lives indoors, and keeping them inside is usually (though not always) the most humane option.

I know there are cultural differences as far as keeping cats goes, but this idea that keeping cats inside is cruel is simply fucking stupid.
If you give cats a chance to go outside, they'll usually take it. The evidence indicates that cats disagree with your assertion that they are perfectly happy indoors.
My daughter's cat has worked out how to undo the latch and open her living room windows to get outside.

Cats love a place to wander, hang out and watch the world from a high perch. Some bookshelves along the wall and access turn into a cat playground, perch and sleeping area.

I saw that on "My Cat from Hell" show on a bored Saturday afternoon. Someone had cleared a few bookshelves into a continuous ramp then cut a hole between rooms up high.

If you do it right it's pretty simple, functional and decorative. Plus almost all cats love it.

Aw, hell... I done had a fire, over 20-some years ago... had two lil white kittens at the time. Went out one night, came home the next day, seen my charred sofa smolderin in the driveway, yall. Ran into the house screamin fer the kittens. Seen a red plastic bag on the coffee table marked BIOHAZARD. My poor lil kittens were in the bag, mostly white, but with soot on 'em. Lord, I lost my daggone mind, and ran outta the burned-out apartment screamin about the kittens.

A few neighbors came on by, and two of 'em said they seen the firemen givin my kittens mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, which was how the kittens got soot on 'em. They said they firemen tried real hard to save the kittens. But, naw.

I done went by the fire station to thank 'em, a day or so later.

And, uh... here's a huge cat jumpin outta some cat trap.

My sympathies, even if it was twenty years ago. I had a fire destroy most of my stuff a long time ago. I wasn't home, but my flat mate was, with his cat. Happier ending, fireman found and rescued the cat. Flatmate jumped out second floor window, messed up his ankles, both cat and man had a bit of smoke damage but recovered quickly.
