Science / Re: Asteroid making close pass at 39,000 miles
Is there any more info about this close one?  Asteroid - meaning it is in solar orbit?  If so, that close pass is sure to cause some deflection of the prior orbit.

Science / Re: Longwave oceanic heating
Covering water at night reduces infrared heat loss.  To the global alarmists, this means the atmosphere must be heating the uncovered water, because it cooled faster.
Just a quick drive-by, the main effect to reduce heat loss by covering at night is the stopping of evaporation, a major heat loss.

Carry on.
Utter nonsense.  Plastic covers would prevent all evaporation loss, and totally kill the covered plant.  Because it isn't evaporation causing the loss of heat.  And anything that would trap moisture on the plant would lead to extreme frost damage.

What plant are you talking about?  I'm talking about a body of water.  Nonsense my ass, I own a swimming pool that I heat only by the sun and using a "solar blanket".  In summer the pool can get too warm, say 95F, and all I have to do is leave it uncovered one night to knock it down by 5 - 10 F.  With pool at 95F you can see steam rising from it when the sun goes down and the air cools.

....  Why not seek to change the entire order from the ground up?  Why?

Probably because that's not how you have any chance of succeeding in an orderly civilization?
It worked out pretty well for Pol Pot.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He killed the educated father of someone I care about.  He trashed Cambodia in some ways, I understand.

Science / Re: Direct Down Wind Faster Than The Wind
If needed, Tom should be able to make his own wheels from some sheet material...aluminum, fiberglass, plastic.  Best if he has access to a small lathe to turn the OD of the wheels after roughing them out with a bandsaw or jigsaw.

Science / Re: NH winter cooling
We finally got our good rain here, about 3 inches over two days.  I'm glad to have it, but some poor folks in the burn areas were subject to mud and rock flows, flash flood style, and lost their homes or worse.

Mid 70s here again today, but NOAA predicts some rain tomorrow, possible "heavy rain" Monday night and Tuesday!  Rain gutters are cleaned and ready...

This is the first I've heard of "mind control".  Is that the same as public education and moreso the public happy juice to produce citizens compliant in supporting society so the power elites can do the same as always?

No, and yes I'm unhappily coming to understand.

Except here dammit!

You got your next ten years worth of precip all at one whack!  Are the SoCal fires out now?
Uh, what?  We've had no rain, only 80F temperatures and static spark dry.  The Thomas fire is not out, although finally there are no more structures threatened.

Nice.  Any suggestions for the very slippery grease for the slides?

So we could easily make this work, as long at the Trump camp in in the stocks?  (Yes, rhetorical question).

If that is to scale I can see at a glance that there is not nearly enough blade weight, blade height at the right side, drop height, lateral stability and immunity to jamming (locking in vertical motion as one side may advance past the other).  If the first few necks are managed to cut, the right side of the blade drops more and it jams.  Much taller system needed with blade side slides longer than the width of the blade.  They did not consult a mechanical engineer.

Science / Re: NH winter cooling
Thanks guys, this all makes sense to me.  I think anyone would understand about apparent shrinking glaciers, if it was explained to them that they are observing more melting at lower elevations but the ice is being well replenished up top.  So this does appear to reflect a global system change from what's lower in the ice cores.

Have I mentioned that every time I see this thread title, I read it as New Hampshire Winter Cooling, and I have to think about it for 3 seconds or so to figure out it Northern Hemisphere New Hampshire and then I ignore it?
Fixed for you.

.......
"The research not only finds a dramatic increase in snowfall, it further explains connections in the global climate system by attributing the record accumulation to warmer waters thousands of miles away in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans."

You see the word 'accumulation'?  What it means is that the snow, umm, accumulated you know and did not in fact seasonally melt and run off.  A massive shock for the high glacier-forming regions of Alaska I know but still.  Did you give much thought to how they worked out that the snowfall had doubled if it melted and ran off each season?  What do you think they measured to determine the increase?  Did you have too many egg nogs?
This makes me wonder about several ways to interpret brief descriptions.  When I read the words "record accumulation", I assumed this referred to "annual snowfall".  So I suppose this would be measured from some stable point at the first snowfall of the season, to the new snow depth at the end of the snowy season.  Did not think about whether anything was implied about snow conditions at the beginning of the next snowy season, whether it was ascertained that additional snow depth remained compared to the same time one year prior.

If snow melts substantially during the snowy season, between storms, how would you know what the real "record accumulation" is unless you measure snowfall immediately after each storm and keep a record?

Admission - I don't know squat about a "snowy season" up in the NH.  Maybe there are snowfalls on occasion year round?  So would we use some consistent standard such as "beginning of October to end of March" to define the season?

And of course I did work on training the dog. But that necessarily entails some risk to the rabbits don't you think? Or do you think I could have trained the dog with stuffed rabbit dolls? Lol

Do you understand that I've lived in rural areas, usually surrounded by farmers, most of my life? Most of those farmers had chickens, cows, horses, dogs and cats. A few also had rabbits.

This is how it works: You FIRST teach the goddamned dog to obey words like NO or DOWN or STOP. Once it knows that, you apply that training as you introduce them to other animals, like birds, cats and rabbits. If the dog runs at another animal, you say NO or STOP. You say that until the dog knows not to fuck with your cats, chickens, rabbits etc. Or that porcupine in the woods.

There's no excuse for letting your dog kill your livestock. I don't remember ever knowing a farm dog that lived past killing one chicken after being told not to.

So 'lol' yourself. You didn't adequately train your hunting dog before leaving it loose around prey animals. That's on you. Quit making excuses and take some responsibility for your lethal mistakes.
I have actually been terrific friends with 2 dogs that didn't get a second chance.
How did you off them?

Science / Re: NH winter cooling
I agree, something seems to be missing here.  If there has been a doubling of the average snowfall rate from a time that these glaciers were dubbed "stable", but now they are receding, where is this increased snowfall going?  Simplest answer would be that it melts during warmer months but you would think that would be possible to investigate by some sort of observations or measurements at the glacier top, or lower too if that matters.

Anyway, I live in So. Cal and it is T-shirt weather here today.  So dry I am getting static electricity shocks walking around, touching things.

..............How many stories have you heard about men who use their first partner to pay their way through uni and then dump them?...
One, first hand.  My first cousin married young and helped put hubby through Stanford and into medical school.  Divorce followed.  But I really don't know if it was always the plan with him, or any details of the marriage unraveling, I hardly knew them.
