The only positive I really see to all this is that the talk about Zuckerberg thinking about a run in 2020 has completely dried up.

Legislation introduced in California to change the police use of force standard from "reasonable" to "necessary" force.

people are losing their minds over this in red counties.
Trump plans to send the military to guard the border until he gets his fence.

e have very bad laws for our border, and we are going to be doing some things -- I've been speaking with General Mattis -- we're going to be doing things militarily," Mr. Trump said at the White House, seated beside the defense secretary at a meeting with visiting leaders of Baltic nations. "Until we can have a wall and proper security, we're going to be guarding our border with the military. That's a big step. We really haven't done that before, or certainly not very much before."

Obama and Bush both sent national guard troops to the border.

Is it crazy that I think this could be an improvement over having ICE/CBP patrolling the border in terms of lives lost and human suffering?
Comradical Caleb went private within the last couple days.

Trump was issued a court summons yesterday for a lawsuit about the emoluments clause.

A summons has been issued to President Trump in a lawsuit alleging he is violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution.

The lawsuit -- filed by the attorneys general in Washington, D.C., and Maryland -- alleges that Trump is violating the clause, which prevents elected officials from receiving gifts or benefits from foreign governments without Congress's approval, WAMU reported.

The lawsuit is filed against Trump in his "official capacity and in his individual capacity," according to the Washington, D.C., radio station.

The lawsuit also argues that businesses in Maryland and D.C. have been hurt because groups instead choose to stay at Trump's properties in attempts to get in his good favor.

Last year, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit from a liberal watchdog organization arguing that Trump was violating the emoluments clause of the Constitution.

Chaz Rainey, the attorney representing Wilson, said that he plans to appeal the decision. "We live in a world where having a medical marijuana card is enough to say you don't get a gun, but if you're on the no fly list your constitutional right is still protected," he told the AP. He argued that there should be more consistency in how the Second Amendment is applied.

but...muh guns...

Politics and Current Events / Re: Fox News
Pretty sure nobody who marinates their brains and consciences in Fox News will care.
Politics and Current Events / Re: The Fourth Estate
NYT continues to disappoint.

The Times' original story made reference to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg-and mentioned her "consternation" at Stamos' efforts to shepherd the tech giant towards being more transparent about Russian trolls' electoral interference. Here's the original paragraph in question:

Mr. Stamos had been a strong advocate inside the company for investigation and disclosing Russian activity on Facebook, often to the consternation of other top executives, including Sheryl Sandberg, the social network's chief operating officer, according to the current and former employees, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters.

This morning, however, readers noticed the sole reference to Sandberg's displeasure with Stamos' transparency efforts-viz. Russia in particular-was wiped clean off the ether. Now, Sandberg's name and the story's only reference to her alleged role in frustrating Stamos' attempts to highlight and root out Russian troll influence on the platform are gone because someone at the New York Times replaced the entire sentence.

Speaking with Newsweek, Hemmert says that, while he received a flood of praise for his decision, that he and his daughter are now on the receiving end of "deeply disturbing" death and rape threats.

"I hope someone breaks into your house and rapes your daughter," wrote one Facebook user according to screenshots provided to Newsweek by Hemmert. "While she is being raped I hope she looks up and says, daddy where's the gun we built? Where!!!!"

According to the veteran, he has also received threats from 2nd Amendment supporters who say they are going to shoot his dog and that someone has been harassing his girlfriend by calling her cellphone.

"There has been a substantial negative and very ugly response," Hemmert elaborated. "The thing that I have learned over the past three days is that there are a lot of unhinged people who own AR-15s, and I am convinced now more than ever that those people really should not be trusted with anything more dangerous than a butter knife."

The disparity, even for black boys raised by wealthy parents, is stark. The chances of falling multiple income levels as an adult are comparatively huge.

Even when children grow up next to each other with parents who earn similar incomes, black boys fare worse than white boys in 99 percent of America. And the gaps only worsen in the kind of neighborhoods that promise low poverty and good schools.

Interestingly, there's no such huge disparity between white and black women.

The biggest predictor of future economic success for poor black boys is a demographic presence of fathers - not in the household, but in the community.  I wonder how much that reflects lower incarceration rates for black men in those particular neighborhoods.
I'm guessing Mueller gets fired very soon

When it happens (I don't say "if") there are going to be some really big protest gatherings.
not really perfect for this thread but I didn't want to start a new one and it is pretty interesting

What did he know, and when did he know it?

I dunno if McCabe has recourse to sue over his pension but I hope so.

I feel kinda sick witnessing someone having their pension shanked like that.  It's something you expect to happen to Walmart managers, not public sector workers.
Would that be considered attempted evidence tampering?
Are you sure that's just not the time it took to get the already completed bridge in place?

They built the span pieces on the ground and then on Saturday craned them onto the supports.

The bridge was meant to more safely connect Florida International University with the community on the other side of the expressway.

The bridge was installed on Saturday.  The construction method was...novel.
