A career intelligence analyst who is an expert in hostage policy stood before President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last fall to brief him on the impending release of a family long held in Pakistan under uncertain circumstances.

It was her first time meeting the president, and when she was done briefing, he had a question for her.

"Where are you from?" the president asked, according to two officials with direct knowledge of the exchange.

New York, she replied.

Trump was unsatisfied and asked again, the officials said. Referring to the president's hometown, she offered that she, too, was from Manhattan. But that's not what the president was after.

He wanted to know where "your people" are from, according to the officials, who spoke under condition of anonymity due to the nature of the internal discussions.

After the analyst revealed that her parents are Korean, Trump turned to an adviser in the room and seemed to suggest her ethnicity should determine her career path, asking why the "pretty Korean lady" isn't negotiating with North Korea on his administration's behalf, the officials said.

At a March meeting with members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Trump asked the elected officials if they knew just one member of his incoming cabinet -- Ben Carson -- according to two people in the room.

Carson, the only black member of Trump's Cabinet, had never served in Congress and spent his career as a surgeon. None of the lawmakers knew Carson, and Trump found that surprising, the attendees said.

During that same meeting, a member relayed to Trump that potential welfare cuts would harm her constituents, "not all of whom are black." The president replied, "Really? Then what are they?"

It's an excuse because he didn't want crowds throwing eggs, rotten fruit, bricks, that sort of thing at him. Plus he's antagonised the elected mayor of the relevant city, and there was a yuge petition against him coming on a state visit, loads of MPs demanded he didn't come, etc. And that was before the PM gently suggested retweeting videos from Britain First was a bad idea, and he shouted via twitter at her.

Basically he'd have got the traditional Cable Street Welcome we give to fascists.

Looking forward to the post-trump modern symphony wherein the first movement is based on this story and is called Prelude to a Pee Tape.

Have some sympathy for the Dotard.
Trump is now 71 years old, obese and barely functioning cognitively.
The only thing he would want prostitutes to piss-out today is diet coke.

I would do it myself (but don't have to), since a bunch of people are already going through the golden showers themed videos at PornHub and xHamster to see if this Stormy Daniels "actress" appeared in any of them.

Feinstein on Trump Statements
Jan 12 2018
Washington--Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on President Trump's comments:

"President Trump's vile comments about Africa and Haiti are despicable and beneath the dignity of the presidency. They unquestionably diminish our country's standing in the world.

"America's greatness is enshrined in the words written on the Statue of Liberty: 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.' It's been said that America is an idea. That idea is rooted in the belief that people from all over the world could come here, whether they were fleeing persecution, poverty, or war, or simply looking for a better life for themselves and their families.

"The president's expressed desire to see more immigrants from countries like Norway must be called out for what it is: an effort to set this country back generations by promoting a homogenous, white society.

"The president's words make the jobs of Americans stationed all over the world harder--soldiers, diplomats and businesses. Hate crimes against Muslims, Jews, LGBT individuals and other minorities have increased over the past two years. White nationalism, which led to the death of a peaceful protestor in August, is on the rise.

"We all need to stop pretending that there are no consequences when the most powerful person in the world espouses racist views and gives a wink and a nod to the darkest elements in our society.

"If the president can't control himself and lead this country with the authority, dignity and leadership it requires, then he shouldn't be the president. There's no room for racism in the Oval Office."

I'd like to think you are referring to our shiny, new squeaky clean president, Emmanuel Macron, and his sweeping "revolution" at the ballot box after reinventing French politics from the centre with his brand new, out-of-the-box En Marche movement.

I worry that the USians who are opposed to Trump don't yet have such an alternative.

By the way, I much appreciate the info that gets presented here on US politics. Fascinating reading and a great distraction from the Brexit disaster. Thanks, seriously.

is it just me, or do recent french presidents have a tendency to start out really popular and then drop far and fast?  i.e., more than the usual honeymoon effect.

Yeah, and don't forget his investment banking background. On the other hand he's a good skier and an excellent linguist.
