  • "il y a une chance que" generally calls for the subjunctive, so could someone please chance "peut" to "puissiez"? Failing that, at least change it to "pouvez" so it doesn't scream  "TalkRational: a republic of illiteracy" to the world.

US Senate candidate proposes arming homeless people with shotguns
"Frankly I think the ideal weapon would be a pistol," he told the Guardian, "but due to the licensing requirements in the state we're going to have a hard enough time getting homeless people shotguns as it is.

"Getting them pistols is probably next to impossible. The pistols need to be registered, people have to have addresses."
Utterly broken people. It never even occurs to him that homeless people who don't own guns need addresses, too.

c'mon, that HAS to be lifted from an Onion piece. It HAS to be.

Third Way makes an opening bid in the 2020 'ideas primary

Third Way fears that Democrats will try to counter the spread of "nativist, nationalist and nostalgic populism" on the right with a warmed-over version of left-wing populism.

You mean like the left-wing populism that got FDR elected 3 or 4 times and pretty much cemented a Democratic stranglehold on the House of Representatives for about 4 decades?

Yeah, that'd be horrible.
Yabbut, there's no fuckin' way the current dems can pull something even close to that off.

not with that attitude
Arts and Entertainment / Re: Avengers: Infinity War
I mean, i'll see it, and I'm sure it will be entertaining, but the avengers-style movies quickly lost their long term appeal.  Stuff like Wonder Woman and Black Panther are much better at being movies.

eta (and the recent Spider-Man).

I still like them for the grand spectacle and I like that they allow Marvel to have not only stand-alone movies but to also weave in storylines that play out over multiple movies with an Avengers movie culmination.

Lots of stuff is supposed to change after Infinity Wars.

Also, who do you guys think will die?

My bets are on Tony Stark, Captain America, Hawkeye and maybe Thor.
Arts and Entertainment / Re: Avengers: Infinity War
I plan to finally see Black Panther tonight.
Actually, on the topic of early US history, do you have any recommendations for books on the early settlement through the Indian War?

i'm not really sure what you mean by "the indian war" but since you're framing it that way:

Facing East from Indian Country and Before the Revolution, both by dan richter. be warned these aren't really written for general consumption (i.e., they're written for other turbonerds).

Oh, so there's a lot of math and weird equations in them?
Austin Package Bombs Appear to Be Targeting Prominent Black Families

Three package bombs have gone off in Austin, Texas, in the past two weeks, and they appear to have targeted members of prominent black families, the president of the local NAACP told NBC News Wednesday.

And yet Senator Flake you continue to toe your party line when it comes time to vote.

Have there been any Melania sightings since the Stormy Daniels story started blowing up again?
Are you sure that's just not the time it took to get the already completed bridge in place?

I'm pretty sure it was the time to put in place since I said "put it up" and instead of "build it". I could have been clearer I guess.

630,000 people tuned in to watch Drake play some Fortnite Battle Royale with Twitch streamer Ninja.

I read elsewhere that Ninja got 90,000 subscribers from that stream which is around $250k take home for Ninja. Not a bad payday for playing Fortnite with Drake for a couple of hours.
Someone just showed me an article saying they put it up in only six hours?

Maybe they should have taken at least seven.

The Republican drew criticism after he made derisive comments on Twitter about Emma Gonzalez, a survivor of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

Gonzalez, who identifies as bisexual, is one of several Parkland students who have earned a high profile in the media for their push for stricter gun control in the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting, which left 17 people dead.

"There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you're a frothing at the mouth moonbat," Gibson tweeted in response to a report on Gonzalez's rocketing number of Twitter followers, according to the Sun Journal.

He also criticized David Hogg, another Parkland survivor who has become a prominent activist in the wake of the shooting, calling Hogg "a bald faced liar," the news outlet reported.

Gibson later apologized on Twitter before deleting his account.

"I would like to extend to you my most sincere apology for how I addressed you," he said, according to New York Magazine. "It was wrong and unacceptable. You are doing work that is important to you. I would like to extend my hand in friendship and understanding to you."

Trump is basically trying to turn his administration into a literal cable news show.

Hold on Senator, it's way too soon to start making legislation to save pets from airline attendants. Emotions are still too high right now. But my thoughts and prayers go out to all pet owners flying the friendly skies.

Yeah, that'd be horrible.

While some Democrats, such as Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, were quick to denounce Haspel, others were not. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., instead issued praise of the woman who oversaw Bush-era torture programs.

"We've had a long personal talk," Feinstein said on Tuesday of the interrogation program, according to CNN. "I have spent some time with her. We have had dinner together. We have talked. Everything I know is that she has been a good deputy director of the CIA."

Way to go DiFi . . .
Politics and Current Events / Re: Trumpocalypse
Trump reportedly had to be talked out of killing the Iran deal each time he had to rubberstamp its renewal, so that's probably a consistent belief. But Pompeo will have to publicly adress lots of other issues as Sec. State, only to be contradicted by improvised Trump tweets.
even with a new batch of idiots, ideologues, and yes-men in his cabinet, i think trump's advisers will still have a tendency to push back against his dumb cartoon-thinking and fox news isms.  once they're in those jobs they get plugged into policy in a real and concrete way, and the professionals below them show them the pros and cons of various options, and they gain some appreciation for what the good and bad moves would be.

e.g., tearing up the iran deal would give iran a rock solid excuse to kick out inspectors and resume research we're concerned about, in return for...  (wait for it) ... nothing.  if trump is thinking he can bring back sanctions to pressure them into giving more, that is unlikely.  the multilateral sanctions are gone, and there is no international political appetite for restoring them outside the treaty framework - especially not if it's based on a random, unilateral decision by trump.  there is a mechanism under the treaty to make them "snap back", but it requires that Iran violate the treaty - which they haven't, even according to the trump administration - and it would need to be certified by 3/5 of US, UK, France, russia, and china; of whom I think the UK is the only one we might get to go along.  lastly of course we could do unilateral sanctions, though those are ineffective, symbolic garbage that would only accomplish snubbing iran on the world stage and giving them an excuse to break the treaty.

I think even shitty cabinet members can look at things like that and think "maybe we should slow down here".

You still actually believe this?
Politics and Current Events / Re: Trumpocalypse
That's not a given. I mean sure, Trump may agree with him right now but who's to say what Trump will believe about 5 seconds from now?
Politics and Current Events / Re: Trumpocalypse
They're saying Pompeo is in at State and a CIA torturer is in at CIA . . . but don't those people need to be confirmed by the Senate first? I know odds are they will be but I can see the Democrats at least filibustering his new CIA pick who is a horrible person and ought to unironically be in jail for running a secret CIA torture prison in Thailand and who I understand would immediately be arrested in the EU if she steps foot there.

Apparently an arrest warrant for her in the EU has only been requested but it doesn't look like it's been granted yet.

However from the above story:

"She was up to her eyeballs in torture: both in running a secret torture prison in Thailand, and carrying out an order to cover up torture crimes by destroying videotapes," Anders said. "One man held at the secret prison she ran was waterboarded 83 times, slammed against walls, sleep deprived, and locked in a coffin-like box. After she was promoted to a position back at CIA headquarters, she worked to destroy evidence of the torture crimes committed at the prison she ran."

The guy also lost an eye and the CIA determined he had no useful information.

eta2: oh yeah, she's also accused of destroying videotape evidence of her tortures.

James Schwab has resigned from his job as a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, saying he didn't agree with Trump administration officials' use of "misleading facts" to attack Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf after the mayor issued a warning about an immigration sweep in late February.

"I quit because I didn't want to perpetuate misleading facts," Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I asked them to change the information. I told them that the information was wrong, they asked me to deflect, and I didn't agree with that. Then I took some time and I quit."

These people are delusional.

Uh, hey my friends. The only ones talking about a civil war are you guys. And I hate to break it to you but your masturbatory fantasies about a couple of good ole boy hunters taking out an M1A1 platoon is just that . . . a masturbatory fantasy. What, you think tank platoons are just a few tanks running around by themselves looking for other tanks to shoot like in World of Tanks? Tank platoons have air, infantry and artillery support.
I hope he gets the AIDS and has to pay his jacked up price for the medicine he needs.
