German elections
Anyone else following this? It looks likely that Merkel will win re-election as chancellor, which is probably good. However, there is a disturbing rise in the far right party AfD, which is the first far right party in Germany since the actual nazis.
There are some good reference links at the bottom of the linked story with background on the different factions.

Moar:
Lots of news links.

Here's an interesting tweeters thread about AfD and Russian Germans:

And an AfD Russian ad:

Quote
Full text: "With valor for Germany and our children An uninvited guest is worse than a Tatar Protect our borders, deport the islamists!"

See the replies underneath - people did not respond well. Of course you had the predictable "THIS IS GERMANY SPEAK GERMAN" response from AfD supporters lol.

It's not gone yet. 1929 or so, not 1933.

still bad. not Trump bad, but not good

What's really concerning is that among men in Eastern Germany, the AfD won handily.

People are predicting a messy process of forming a government coalition.

The AfD support isn't that much of a surprise given that lots of people hate Merkel (for taking in refugees) with as much intensity as the US right-wing of politics hate Clinton.

The AfD gained more than 8 points on its 2013 result, when it failed to reach the 5% hurdle that would have allowed it into the Bundestag. Thirty-five percent of its supporters were first-time voters.
IOW, no memory of, or interest in, how this fucked up last time. Probably spent all their time surreptitiously texting during history lessons.

On the "I really shouldn't laugh at this, but can't stop" front;

The AfD got 88 seats.

God may have been scooped by a sign from the AfD co-founder:
Quote
"If the French are rightly proud of their emperor and the Britons of Nelson and Churchill, we have the right to be proud of the achievements of the German soldiers in two world wars," Alexander Gauland, 76, said in a speech to supporters on 2 September that has since been uploaded to YouTube.

"If I look around Europe, no other people has dealt as clearly with their past wrongs as the Germans," he said.
