Turkey decides to roast itself.
I can see this going well.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/16/erdogan-claims-victory-in-turkish-constitutional-referendum

Quote
The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has achieved victory in a historic referendum on a package of constitutional amendments that will grant him sweeping new powers.

Sadi Güven, the head of Turkey's high electoral board (YSK), confirmed the passage of the referendum on Sunday night, based on unofficial results.

The yes campaign won 1.25m more votes than the no campaign, with only about 600,000 votes still to be counted, Güven told reporters in Ankara, meaning the expanded presidential powers had been approved.

Hearing there are a lot of irregularities, such as districts being reported when they weren't counted yet as reported by election officials in those districts. Very real possibility Erdogan lost the referendum but no one will ever know the real results.

I guess they're giving up permanently on their EU application

remember when a big reason for brexit was that turkey was supposedly about to get fast-tracked for EU membership, and 70 million muslims would flood into britain?  good times.

I just don't understand what the Turks think they are doing.  They had a secular, modern government a military that would put down these kinds of shenanigans and a youth population that liked being part of the rest of the world.

Now over the past ten years or so they've decided to just let all that slip away.  Ataturk left the Turkish people a country on the rise.  And they've decided to throw it away.

Do they miss the Ottoman Empire that much?

first time in history a democracy has voted away its democracy. Rome was not a democracy. I think the precedent here may have some foreboding overtones.

Erdogan reportedly said that democracy is a like a tram that you take to its destination and then get off.

Erdogan basically wants to be a caliph. That's the direction he's taking Turkey in, and half of them are silly enough to fall for it.

I would not be at all surprised if it turns into another Syria not too far down the track.

At which point it will become our unsolvable Dumbfuckistan, 'cause we haz teh boom-booms there, and Syria will be Uncle Vlad's unsolvable Dumbfuckistan, and as is traditional the poor old Kurds will be stuck in the middle being shat upon from all sides.

Which is a great pity, as Rojava really is a cool little project and I wanted it to go well.

My word, never have I ever seen the US government express overt support for a dictator.

Yabbut this is a newly minted dictatorship. It's pretty hard to imagine any historical us president, especially post WWI, congratulating a democracy for dissolving itself.

It's hard not to see it as a sign that the global resource wars have begun in earnest.

Well, when populations are willing to trade freedom for security, things have gotten past the sharing stage.

There is no mystery. The pussy-grabbing President just got confused. He thought someone said Dick-takers.

When will we get the story about Trump calling Erdogan and congratulating him?
