graywebhost is looking pretty good to me.  I'd have no qualms about starting a new forum there.

If we are able to recover the original database, how do you think their offerings would hold up?

On paper my little server should be fine with the level of traffic increase I'm seeing so far, but it has impacted both this forum and the other forum on my site.

But, in other news my site isn't the only one on this shared server that was throwing 403s yesterday, so it could actually be a network issue of some sort, maybe.

Anyway, once ksen shows up (hopefully tomorrow - if not I'll text him) we can move forward on buying some server space.

I don't know how to predict what we'll need in 3 months or 6 months.

First time around, TR grew explosively because other sites were having political implosions.  I expect we'll get 70-100 registrations in the next week or two and then things will slow down.
Wherever you choose, make sure there is telephone support. I don't think TR will be as busy at it was in 2010 for a long time if ever.

Can ask what package they think would cover it. Plenty of experience hosting forums, so should be able to give a reliable answer. I assume any of their packages in excess of TR's bandwidth requirements should be able to do the job. Storage space doesn't seem to be an issue.

Defamation

The customer may not host material that is:

  • threatening or obscene;
  • offensive to any person or group. This includes, but is not limited to: prejudice, racism, intolerance, hatred, and harassment; expressions that are by nature libelous, defamatory, and offensive to or disrespectful of ethnic, racial, religious, or other groups;
  • harmful to minors;
  • likely to cause damage to reputation of third parties.

I noticed that the list of rules for this zombie forum are pretty stringent too - how long do we expect to be here?  I'm pretty mild, but I can only hold the inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, adult material at bay for sooo long before I snap.

Depends if they actually enforce them, or if they don't give a rat's as long as nobody complains. I suspect they may be there so they can cover the arses if necessary, but am not sure.

Would also trust these guys: https://graywebhost.com/hosting-plans.php

I've known the bloke who runs that company for years. He's part of the server team for the SMF project and he's sane. Haven't ever used his hosting, but have no reason to think there would be anything wrong with it. Can easily get straight answers to any questions if necessary. I'll just PM him and see what he says.

ksen, how does this company look to you?

My only hesitation is how we pay in euros and if it's based in Europe does that mean European speech laws apply?

did you see the user agreement that osmanthus posted on the previous page?  Does it sound like something we'd have trouble with?

The agreement on this server is more restrictive.

This *is* the new board.  It needs a bigger server than my blog site.

I get that. But if the server is based in Europe then European laws apply?

Wouldn't that make the next schneibster-like threats of police action more real?

Seriously, though, I'd developed a very nice "not my problem" attitude about what goes on at TR.  I'm looking forward to recovering my Zen again.

I dunno the answer, but that's a good question.

Just thought of something. They accept payment via Paypal, and Paypal does automatic currency conversions. So the paying in Euros thing is not an issue if using Paypal.
