Summer Olympics 2016 - Her name is Rio, and there's feces on her sands
Rio 2016: Athletes warned to keep mouths closed when swimming in faeces-infested water
All efforts by the government to clean the Rio waters seem to have failed

Athletes competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil have been warned by doctors, engineers, and scientists to keep their mouths shut while participating in activities in the water.

Researchers found that many of the beaches in Rio de Janeiro have been long contaminated with raw sewage, household garbage, and even dead bodies, creating hazardous swimming conditions for the 500,000 people expected to descend on the city in August.

"Foreign athletes will literally be swimming in human crap, and they risk getting sick from all those microorganisms," Rio paediatrician Dr Daniel Becker told the New York Times. "It's sad but also worrisome."

The Brazilian government had promised to clean the pathogen-infested Guanabara Bay in 2014, but those efforts failed.

The title of this thread is so revolting, however apt, that I'm not even interested in liveblogging during these games.  Is Rio so much a cesspool that nobody should want to watch, much less liveblog?

For me, the olympics are such a tv show that I don't want to watch so the consideration of the location never comes up.

I read that the city went from something like 10% sewage treatment to 60%.  So that's something.

I still haven't worked the nerve up to watch that guy break his leg on the vault.  According to this article the medics dropped one end of his stretcher before getting him loaded into the ambulance.

The video isn't any worse than the still.

Decent looking vault, but on the landing his leg just collapses from under him.

I am extremely good at avoiding videos that will cause me to wake up screaming in the middle of the night.  Missing the occasional video that's not too disturbing is a price I'm willing to pay.

Then you should skip the bike crash.  That looks worse.

Three small fractures in her back and concussion apparently. Nibali broke both collarbones yesterday.

That descent was absolutely evil. Even more so when it started raining.
Why do I bother?

So, If Phelps were a country he would be tied with Portugal, Croatia and Nigeria for total Summer Olympic medals all time. (23 total medals is tied for 58th on the country list).

If you rank by Summer Olympic Gold, he would be sole 40th position with 19 Gold, ahead of Austria and Argentina and just behind Ethiopia.

Sorry I aint been here, yall, but I been watchin the Rio 2016 Olympics, mostly via NBC primetime, idk!

The Olympics always seemed to me to be about the triumph of human achievement. The propellant of stars from small clusters of athletes. idk yall. I seen some really inspirin stuff, and not much to complain about, 'ceptin fer them golddanged GREEN POOLS IN RIO, what in tarnation.

If you look closely the pools are a mix of green and yellow, the Brazilian national colors.

So, how's about them USA swimmers... #LochteMessMonster... them fellas need to fly back to Rio on their own dime, fix up that bathroom, paint the whole buildin, re-do the roof, and pay a lotta money to the attendant who they assaulted. They pay for it all outta their own money. Oh, and since them privileged assholes done destroyed the USA's image, and tarnished every medal we won, they need to give their own medals back, The Olympics are about honor and sportsmanship, or, they should be. The swimmers done goof'd.

All in all, with some Americans making asses of themselves while getting in trouble with the law being the worst thing that happened, or maybe that guy who broke his leg on live TV, this Olympics turned out a lot less bad than many had feared.
