The Trump Kompromat Theory
Intel chiefs presented Trump with claims of Russian efforts to compromise him
http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/10/politics/donald-trump-intelligence-report-russia/index.html

Quote
Classified documents presented last week to President Obama and President-elect Trump included allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump, multiple US officials with direct knowledge of the briefings tell CNN.

The allegations were presented in a two-page synopsis that was appended to a report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The allegations came, in part, from memos compiled by a former British intelligence operative, whose past work US intelligence officials consider credible. The FBI is investigating the credibility and accuracy of these allegations, which are based primarily on information from Russian sources, but has not confirmed many essential details in the memos about Mr. Trump.

Quote
These senior intelligence officials also included the synopsis to demonstrate that Russia had compiled information potentially harmful to both political parties, but only released information damaging to Hillary Clinton and Democrats. This synopsis was not an official part of the report from the intelligence community case about Russian hacks, but some officials said it augmented the evidence that Moscow intended to harm Clinton's candidacy and help Trump's, several officials with knowledge of the briefings tell CNN.

The two-page synopsis also included allegations that there was a continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, according to two national security officials.

Trump will simply deny it.
The Republican congress will decline to investigate.
U.S. policy - inasmuch as the president controls it - will become more Russia friendly.
And no one can do a damn thing about it.

I know I'm dreaming here, but if this were to be proven conclusively, maybe Ryan et al. would decide they like working with Pence so much better than Trump that it's worth to pursue it?

He's not invincible. And his campaign's collusion with Russian intelligence services is so unbelievable that the word unbelievable doesn't even cover it.

David Corn reported on this in October. It's been well known that FSB keeps tabs on high-level and famous people, which is why politicians limit their communications and are careful with electronic devices they bring into Russia. It's a reasonable assumption to make that they have information on Trump. But now it's hitting the news cycle again with the backing of some intelligence sources.

A few reporters have also been digging into his financial dealings in his casinos, and there seems to be a fair amount of circumstantial evidence linking him to the Russian mafia. He may have been allowing Russian mob bosses to launder their money through his casinos. And of course, the Russian mob is closely tied to intelligence/security services. There's so much collusion between the two that being in bed with one means you wake up next to the other.

This is some real serious shit.

They will report.
Trump will deny.
His followers will follow him.
The truest thing he said during the campaign was that he could shoot someone in broad daylight on 5th Ave. and it wouldn't lose him any support.

True. That will give us something to do while the country/world goes down the drain.

ETA:
Sorry.
I'm seriously depressed about all this.
I'm going to go get a beer.

I'm still thinking this is a strong possibility.

And much though I abhor Pence, at least he is sane.

tbh I think the Republicans would drop Trump in a heartbeat if they thought it wouldn't cost them his voters.

Trouble is, it would.

Call me naive, I guess, but if any of these things can be substantiated, it will be the end of Trump. I know it seems like he can get away with anything and that the GOP will support literally everything he does or says, but this is different than him saying outrageous things or appointing cronies or shitting on procedural norms. This Russia connection appears to run very deep, and if anyone comes up with concrete proof, I believe the GOP will throw him to the fucking wolves, even if he will still have ardent supporters among some of his voters.

2016 has taught me that optimism is misguided, at best.

Is any of that grounds for impeachment?

Sure. But that would require a Republican Congress to vote that way.

Buzzfeed just published the dossier: https://www.buzzfeed.com/kenbensinger/these-reports-allege-trump-has-deep-ties-to-russia?utm_term=.hiXzQ7d1j#.kl4NGQ8wq

Caveats:
Quote
The document is not just unconfirmed: It includes some clear errors. The report misspells the name of one company, "Alpha Group," throughout. It is Alfa Group. The report says the settlement of Barvikha, outside Moscow, is "reserved for the residences of the top leadership and their close associates." It is not reserved for anyone, and is also populated by the very wealthy.

Well, of course, Trump would like his showers golden.

ETA: not sure weird ritualistic hatred of Obama is the scandal that can take down Trump. I'd put better odds on some video documentation of weird stuff Trump does when he's alone.

pretty likely, I think.
But even if he goes through with it, I doubt it will much resemble what "press conference" means to most people familiar with the term.

well on the detached irony side, pretty funny that the US spent decades interfering in foreign elections or staging coups in countries that might be even mildly friendly to Russia only to end up owned by Russia via an idiot reality TV star in the end.

It reminds me of movies, game of thrones, etc where you are telling at the screen, "why don't they just..." when it is obvious who the killer/spy/etc is but everyone is clueless or won't do shit

Anyway, I quoted the most salacious part that happened to be in the first section. I'm still skimming through the rest, which involves a lot of accusations about collusion with Kremlin insiders. It also accuses Trump of directly bribing St. Petersburg officials. His lawyer, Michael Cohen, is accused of meeting with members of the Russian government and operatives/hackers. The document alleges that they discussed how to handle covert payments to operatives and make sure they wouldn't be traced if Clinton won. Apparently, Cohen's wife is Russian and his father-in-law is a property developer in Moscow. The head of Rosneft is also accused of offering Carter Page and Trump's associates a stake in the company if sanctions are lifted.

If even a fraction of this is true, this is pretty serious.
