They're calling it for Northam.

And already the "OMG morally bankrupt centrist RepubliCON in sheep's clothing JUST LIKE HILLARY ALL OVER AGAIN" hot takes begin.

Nevermind that their platforms were so similar that I couldn't make up my fucking mind and watching one of their debates made me even more undecided. Honestly, the hound dog was the deciding factor because look at that precious doggo.

The VA GOP has gone full fucking looney tunes. If there was ever a chance I would've voted for any of their candidates at any level, that chance is gone. Even if there's an unopposed race, I'm leaving it fucking blank. Fuck these assholes.

Very slim chance, but in an unopposed race, I may have filled in the circle/box to satisfy some minor beep boop OCD-like tendencies, and fuck it, I won't even do that. I think I may have done that in NY, but I honestly can't remember all the fucking city dogcatcher type races.

Requested my absentee ballot a few days ago. :meeps:

Saw this tonight:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/for-both-sides-of-abortion-debate-unusually-high-stakes-in-virginia-governors-race/2017/09/11/d651a198-787d-11e7-8839-ec48ec4cae25_story.html

Quote
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam, the sitting lieutenant governor and a physician, has positioned himself as a champion of abortion rights. Republican rival Ed Gillespie said he'd like to see the procedure banned, with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the mother's life.

The Republican-controlled state legislature has tried for years to restrict abortion, foiled by Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), who has vetoed bills to defund Planned Parenthood and says the governor's mansion is the "brick wall" against attempts to limit women's reproductive rights.

Quote
Gillespie has tried to play down abortion and instead focus on the economy and public safety. Asked about Gillespie's views on abortion, his spokesman, Dave Abrams, responds that Northam's views "are outside the mainstream" and that the lieutenant governor supports late-term abortions -- which are illegal in Virginia and opposed by most voters.

Northam has said that the timing of abortions should be determined by a woman and her doctor, but he does not want to change the state law that limits late-term abortions.

The number of abortions performed in Virginia declined by one-third between 2009 and 2015, according to state data. The decline coincided with a rollback of abortion rights by the state's past GOP governor, Robert F. McDonnell, whose term ended in 2014.

In 2011, he signed legislation regulating abortion clinics as hospitals -- a move that critics said was meant to drive the clinics out of business. The regulations have since been dropped by the state health board dominated by McAuliffe appointees.

McDonnell in 2012 also signed a bill mandating abdominal ultrasounds before abortion. As originally written, the bill would have required women seeking an abortion early in a pregnancy to undergo a vaginal ultrasound. It made Virginia fodder for late-night comedians.

Northam, then a state lawmaker, raised his profile -- and won the allegiance of abortion rights supporters -- with a speech on the floor of the Senate where he said the ultrasounds would be about as useful as a probe of a bottle of Gatorade.

The proposed requirement of an invasive ultrasound was ultimately defeated. But it continues to resonate in this year's down-ballot races.

The Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, state Sen. Jill Vogel, was the sponsor of the ultrasound legislation, and she is trying to defend it against attacks by Democratic rival Justin Fairfax.

Please fucking vote. Please. :mason:

My ballot was received. Voted for the candidate who would be the first Latina representative at the state level. :patriot:

Have a bad feeling about all this though. Lunatic race baiter Corey Stewart says he feels vindicated because Gillespie's campaign is basically the same as his was during the primary, and he's absolutely right. Race baiting really fucking works, so...

I can't see Northam losing but that's probably shaped by the fact I avoid going south of Springfield.

I used to work right outside Fauquier county, so a lot of people were from the Warrenton area, Culpeper, etc. Most of my coworkers were alright, but some of them did not like Hispanics and made that fairly clear every once in a while. One girl would always complain when adopted shelter animals came in with Hispanic names. Like it made her honestly mad. She ignored me when I got fed up and said, "What the hell is wrong with the name Rosa?" because I think she knew better than to keep running her mouth, but it didn't stop her from continuing to "ugh, really?" about it when she thought I wasn't listening.

Not as annoying as the tech who told me there are too many immigrants in this country. lol ok bye then enjoy finishing out the shift without me guys

polls have northam ahead by a few points.  polls underestimated trump last year, but pollsters are undoubtedly trying to correct the error and probably doing an ok job on average.  polls are not perfect but they are usually close.

betting markets are 2:1 northam.  but betting markets also said trump and brexit would lose and scotus would strike down the individual mandate.

silver doesnt seem to be doing a forecast for these races.

in conclusion, who knows what will happen.  my gut feeling is its 50-50.  I am mentally preparing myself for a Gillespie/adams win, though.  both would be rough.

Well, at least when it comes to running a campaign, I've heard it was a big wet fart.

e: plus the unnecessary race-baiting sanctuary cities shit, but maybe he knows VA politics better than some dude from Illinois and he'd get more votes than he'd lose for that

Why is his campaign a big wet fart? The reality is that good candidates are usually kind of fucking boring, especially when we've all been over-stimulated by the insanity of some of these lunatic campaigns.

And lol unnecessary race-baiting sanctuary cities shit? For real? Gillespie has been race-baiting for fucking weeks, putting out pretty disgusting ads about how MS-13 is going to rape your grandma and Northam is going to hold her down and how Northam loves child molesters and illegals and how we need to preserve OUR HERITAGE and protect ARE STATUES. Northam's position on sanctuary cities, which aren't even allowable under Virginia law in the fucking first place, was crystal clear since at least October, but him saying it suddenly became A Thing because people are fucking dumb.

Northam was a fucking idiot on sanctuary cities.  From CNN:

Quote
Northam absolutely botched his position on sanctuary cities in the closing weeks of the race -- insisting that despite his vote to kill a bill in the state Senate that would ban sanctuary cities (even though Virginia doesn't have any!), he actually would have voted in support of the legislation he killed if Virginia did have any sanctuary cities.

I'm sorry, but this is not "crystal clear," it is "Hillary Clinton on Gay Marriage" clear.  That is, stupidly confusing and reeking of opportunism.

Also, the Latino Victory Fund is apparently run by a bunch of fucking idiots.  These are self inflicted wounds.

In other news, New Jersey also elects a new governor today.
Either the republican (Kim Guadagno, Christie's lieutenant gov.) or the democrat (Phil Murphy, Goldman-Sachs alum).
The only question seems to be: by how large a margin will the republican lose.

Alright, my bad, I misunderstood that commotion. Still, Gillespie is an asshole. He's from New Jersey, guys.

Some pundits are saying Christie has ruined things for NJ Republicans for a whole generation. lol nope. I mean, they're likely to lose the governorship today, but NJ Republicans as a whole aren't fucking going anywhere. Plus the state is very forgiving of disastrous shitbag governors. If they weren't, neither party would ever be able to win an election again.
