Meaning of the name "Wai Wai"??
Some smart person here researched the meaning of the name "Wai Wai" ... the name of the people group in N. Brazil where my father was a missionary.  I can't remember what they came up with?

Anyone remember?

Someone asked me and I can't recall the answer.

gawd Dave.

It means something that indicates that they are NOT "hunter gatherers".  Did you just Hawkins all the posts pointing this out?

He did, he did, and then totally ignored the list that came up. Easiest way to locate them and then ignore them.

They ARE hunter gatherers. They hunt. And they gather.  And they also eat cassava.

Where do they get the cassava?

They hunt it.

Then they gather it.

Just like David hunts and then gathers Crispy Cremes.
It's what plants crave.

They hunt.  They fish.  They gather wild fruits.  They also plant cassava.  And eat it.

Seems to me if you really wanted to know what the name means, you could simply ask your good friends, the Wai Wai. Or perhaps your parents.

Or, of course, you could deploy your much vaunted google-fu:
Quote
Wai Wai means "tapioca people" and they were given that name because of the enormous amount of the tapioca (cassava) they eat.

Dave, as a general rule "hunter-gatherer" refers to peoples who do not practice any agriculture. Not people who practice agriculture and supplement it with hunting and gathering.
Why do I bother?

Otherwise most of my neighbours would be called hunter gatherers, even though most of their food comes from grocery stores, because many of them hunt deer and rabbits and birds, and gather berries.

Hey, I hunt for food at the local Freddies and gather it up in my Odyssey to bring it back to the tribe.

Is there some reason I have to hunt for my food in specific locations? I mean, if I raid a honey bee hive, how is that fundamentally different from raiding the Honey Aisle at Freddies? How is using my Odyssey to take me around to my various hunting grounds not consistent with being a hunter/gatherer.

True, I try not to kill other creatures (other than the odd bug) with my hunting and gathering. But I still have to go to some place with plenty of game to obtain the food my tribe needs. What does it matter if I teleport there or drive my Odyssey or walk?

Seriously, Dave, "hunter-gatherer" is an category in anthropology that denotes a culture that lives primarily by hunting and gathering.  Other terms include "pastoralist" and "agriculturalist".  A culture named for the farmed food that they eat is, by definition, an agriculturalist culture, not a hunter-gatherer culture.  Unless you think that the Wai Wai were only called "tapioca eaters" because they ate tapioca very occasionally?

You appear to be advocating a pastoralist diet on the basis that hunter-gatherer diets are healthy, look at the health of my friends the agriculturalists.

Those three kinds of diets are VERY DIFFERENT.

I would say that the Wai Wai practice hunting and gathering primarily and supplement with agriculture.  In any case, thanks for the research on the meaning of the name.

Dave, "googling" =/= research.

And I suggest that a culture that takes its name from an agriculturally produced food is an agriculturalist culture.

For what it's worth,  I'm not at all convinced that this blogger knows what he's talking about with respect to his claim about the Wai Wai name.   My earliest recollection from my father's conversations with the people themselves is that it means something along the lines of "the people." Also the primitive root "wai" in the Wai Wai language means "to sweep."  So for example, "I sweep" is "waiwesi."

Which "blogger" are you talking about?

There are numerous sources online that give the origin of the name as meaning "tapioca people".

Of course the sources are probably not independent, and the primary source may not be correct.

But even IF that source is wrong, there is copious evidence from anthropologists that cassava cultivation has been part of Wai Wai culture for millenia.

Which would make them "agriculturalists" not "hunter-gatherers"

Here is an interesting article about cassava cultivation, including the Wai Wai's use of cassava:

You scientists are so black-and-white about everything.  You can argue all day long whether to label the Wai Wai as agriculturalists or as hunter gatherers, but the truth of the matter is they are mostly hunter gatherers and a little bit agriculturalist.  If you did an octohatter study I think you would find that most of their calories come from hunting and fishing and palm fruit which grows wild.   This would especially be true of newly established villages, for which there would be no cassava fields for at least one year and maybe two years. Growing cassava is hard work. And preparing that cassava into bread and drink is also hard work.  Hunting and gathering is just easier and more fun.
