A former refugee who came to Montana more than 20 years ago was elected to lead its capital city, Helena, becoming the first black person to become mayor in the state's history.

Wilmot Collins ousted four-term Jim Smith in Tuesday night's mayoral race, capping off a night of historic firsts throughout the country.

Shooting was an ongoing "Domestic situtation."
Quote
SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Tex. -- Investigators said Sunday's church massacre in Texas occurred amid an ongoing "domestic situation" involving the gunman and his relatives, at least one of whom had attended the church.

While authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the attack, they emphasized Monday that the shooting did not appear to be fueled by racial or religious issues. They said the gunman's mother-in-law had attended the church but was not there Sunday, and that the shooter had sent "threatening texts" as part of the family dispute.

"This was not racially motivated, it wasn't over religious beliefs," Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety said at a news briefing. "There was a domestic situation going on within the family and the in-laws."

He was also randomly friending people on Facebook who live in that area and harassing them.  I guess when you are a nutbag you have to harass the entire community where your in-laws live.

Fucking shitstain...

Fake guns?  Ok...

Politics and Current Events / Re: Trumpocalypse
Afaics, every time Trump does/says anything remotely 'normal', your mainstream media jumps on it with great eagerness and pretty much heaps praise on the man. Same with anything remotely positive your government does. And I completely understand that, it's a desperate attempt to employ positive reinforcement in the hopes of encouraging more normality from the Trump administration.

I think this backfires with the majority of Americans who are low information voters even during elections and mostly tune out all politics between elections, because it bores them. They don't really notice anything different from the usual historically ordinary media back and forth on whether a government is performing well or not.

They won't understand how bad this government is until they personally find themselves suffering the consequences, and at that point it is usually too late.

Then there's shit like this: an appalling percentage of Republicans think it's a good idea to pre-emptively start a war with North Korea:

Quote
There was a pretty striking finding in Thursday's Quinnipiac University poll: Fully 46 percent of Republicans -- a plurality -- said they would support a preemptive strike against North Korea.
That's nearly half of President Trump's party that is ready for war -- today -- with Kim Jong Un, his nuclear weapons and all. (Forty-one percent said they opposed a preemptive strike.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/10/14/almost-half-of-republicans-want-war-with-north-korea-says-a-new-poll-is-it-the-trump-effect/?utm_term=.d873c8b0d35d

These are people who are either horrible people, or people who have no understanding whatsoever of the real human cost of war. I honestly find it difficult to believe there are that many people who can even superficially think like that.

It is a little bit of column A and a little of B.

Paddock rented "multiple condos" overlooking the annual festival, which was headlined by Chance the Rapper, Lorde, and Wiz Khalifa and drew around 50,000 people each of its three days, the reports say. The Daily Beast contacted the Ogden, a 21-story condominium with a line of sight to the concert grounds. A rep for the owner said, "We're not in a position to confirm or deny anything about Mr. Paddock's dealings. I suggest you contact Metro [police]. As you know this is an ongoing investigation." Life is Beautiful organizer Justin Weniger declined NBC's request for comment, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Wonder how many times he did this, and why Route 91 was his final choice?  Fucking asshole...

Politics and Current Events / Re: Shooting in Vegas
What's galling here is that if any other type of incident had a victim toll this high there would be evaluation and legislation to try and "close the gaps" to prevent the scale and scope of this type of tragedy in the future.
Plane Crash?
Train Wreck?
Industrial Accident?
Highway Crash?
Building Collapse?
Hell, even protection from a Natural Disaster like and earthquake, tornado or hurricane.

Yeah, like I say, if a brand of dog treat killed 59 dogs and injured 500+ more, there'd be a public meltdown, and it'd be pulled from the market immediately. And people would be ranting about the government not doing anything to save our precious dogs from being poisoned. But humans?

also oh hey look it's the thing i was talking about: http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-las-vegas-shooting-live-updates-at-his-local-starbucks-vegas-shooter-1507060195-htmlstory.html

The workers behind the counter at the  Starbucks inside the Virgin River Casino in Mesquite, Nev., winced whenever Stephen Paddock and his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, lined up for their usual beverages.

That's because Paddock had a nasty habit of berating Danley in public. "It happened a lot," Esperanza Mendoza, supervisor of the Starbucks, said Tuesday.

Their order was always the same. He's get a venti mocha cappuccino and she a medium carmel macchiato.

Workers remembered Paddock as a tall man with a big beer belly and heavy bags under his eyes.

"He looked like he never slept because of the large bags under his eyes," Mendoza said.

Danley was much shorter than Paddock and stood elbow-high when next to him.

The abuse would come when she asked to use his casino card to make the purchase. The card enables gamblers to use credits earned on electronic gambling machines to pay for souvenirs or food in the casino.

"He would glare down at her and say--with a mean attitude--'You don't need my casino card for this. I'm paying for your drink, just like I'm paying for you.' Then she would softly say, 'OK' and step back behind him. He was so rude to her in front of us."

WELL, that explains the $100,000 he wired to the Philippines.  Jesus it's like Rlogan or whatever his name was I forget...

I had a youtube live feed of MSNBC playing this morning.  Some kid who was there called in, I guess his video is one that the media keeps playing.
No concern over the fact that a lunatic was able to shoot at him from a hotel room yards away 32 floors up, nope.

His hot takes:

• Good thing it was a country music festival because there were lots of ex-military who could leap into action!   :patriot:

• The festival grounds were a "kill box" because there were 10-15 ft walls on all sides and only one exit!! (not sure if true but still...)

• The police were so brave protecting people that all "those people" kneeling across the country should be ashamed.

Talked to my mom last night.  My brother in St. Pete lost power on Sat and I am pretty sure it's still out.  His house is fine, just a lot of tree debris in his neighborhood.  I guess the lack of working stoplights is causing a lot of accidents. He went for a drive the other day and saw three accidents happen, and he was only out for like an hour.

WTF Florida drivers!

The park, once a retiree paradise, was one of only a few places low-income workers could afford in the Keys' pricey rental market.

My "if it moves west" Virginia friend who lives in St. Pete had her boyfriend finally convince her they should probably gtfo, so they left in the middle of the night and managed to make it to Charleston. I don't know how they managed to do that when so many other people have been stuck.

My brother lives near St. Pete. He doesn't live in an evac zone so I doubt he is evacuating.  Hopefully by the time it gets up there it will have weakened considerably.
