Smarter than your average bear

http://gazette.com/watch-bear-spent-6-hours-in-colorado-springs-house-before-officers-killed-it/article/1606446

Quote
"Our biologist believes it had learned the cues of the sound of a garage door opening. It had learned that the sound of a garage door opening meant dinner," said Bill Vogrin, public information officer for Parks and Wildlife. "This bear was so fat from eating human food it couldn't climb a tree ... so it made a bed under a tree."

Despite its taste for human food, the bear managed to avoid two traps baited with doughnuts, icing, syrup and dog food, after Backstrom's encounter, Vogrin said.

Take that, stupid humans.

Quote
"It takes an enormous amount of strength, something I could never do," O'Dubhraic said.

lol that is exactly what I would expect a guy who looks like that guy to say.

Quote
The bear accessed the home through a crank-style window on the first floor that was damaged in a recent windstorm and had been left ajar.

"The bear popped it open and broke off the crank mechanism and came in the window," Vogrin said. "This was a smart bear, a dangerous bear, so it was only a matter of time before someone got hurt. We're lucky it didn't happen last night."

Anti-intellectualism in this country has gone too far.

Poor Mr. Bear. RIP, little buddy.  :smith:

Bears are basically giant dogs that we haven't domesticated yet.

YET.

You know some dogs can and have killed people, right? Bears are ... a whole lot bigger. With really big teeth. And claws. Claws like this:

No pity for the seal? I suppose you've seen that pc of the seal ripping the head off a penguin and think the seal deserves to be eaten. :colbert:

That wasn't a seal, it was a sea lion.  Stop trying to confuse the matter.

Some boring seal that's not half as smart as a polar bear.

I feel some pity for the seals, but anti-bear rhetoric is the bigger issue. Bears are much cooler than seals.

No. Grizzlies are a subspecies of brown bears. Grizziles are Ursus arctos horribilis (what a mean name :sadcheer: ) and brown bears are just plain Ursus arctos. eta meaning all grizzlies are brown bears but not all brown bears are grizzlies.

Bear taxonomy for you to read because bears are awesome: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_bear#Scientific_brown_bear_taxonomy

Yes but most of the brown bears you are likely to encounter in NA will be subspecies grizzly.

Unless of course you meet a brown coloured specimen of American Black Bear. Which is not a brown bear but a black bear.
