It's INSANE to think that an alien that can reincarnate as any form would ever choose to be anything other than a white male human.

You'd think they'd be cis-thrilled because now they can fantasise about being the next Companion. Oh wait - she's 37, therefore TOO OLD!

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant in a bad way.  Saw something on Facebook (can't find it now) that their are some fans who are very upset about it.

I am very happy. There are female actors I may have chosen over her (Tilda Swinton's an obvious one), but movie stars are expensive, so I doubt she'd ever do it. I haven't seen Broadchurch, so I can't judge her acting chops other than only seeing her in Attack The Block with John Boyega (that's a cracking little film if you've not seen it).

My main worry is that Chibnall is the new showrunner, and he's been responsible for some of the worst of the nu-Who scripts.
Why do I bother?

My favourite of the negative reactions has been "what next, Jackie Chan's Poirot?" To which the obvious response is "hell yes, sign me up!"

Several commenters said it is Rupert Giles. (Buffy the VS character).

Yeah it's great - it really makes sense that a time'lord' should be gender and sexuality fluid

I'm assuming you're serious, but you can guarantee there are a bunch of butthurt morons out there who are saying that because they're being butthurt morons.

Tilda Swinton would be amazing.

Tilda S would no doubt be very good, but I'm quite interested in Jodie's take on it. She's worked with some of the makers before and it seems likely to be a harmonious partnership on set.

Personally I prefer older Doctors, having grown up with Sylvester McCoy and Jon Pertwee (thanks to reruns), and for similar reasons I'm a big fan of Capaldi. Saying that I loved Matt Smith, and he was the youngest of them, so I'll admit to not being terribly consistent here.

Same, he was pretty good. David Tenant however owned the role, best since Tom Baker IMO.

The last 2 are recent ones, the question was about pioneers of strong female leads in TV (yeah in this case more superhero than scifi but I was more focussed on the role per se than the genre)

That would be awesome.
"You foul Japanese upstart!"
"Chinese upstart, Madame".
Who even made the rule that we cannot group ducks and fish together for the simple reason that they are both aquatic? If I want to group them that way and it serves my purpose then I can jolly well do it however I want to and it is still a nested hierarchy and you can't tell me that it's not.
