What a blast: Micro FPV quadcopter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr1kWhq-SLU

I got the $199 bundle that comes with a 4.5" LCD screen instead of a goggle set.  Plus some extra batteries and props.  But I quickly decided to get the goggle shown in the video. The nose doesn't fit well, but it's inexpensive and it works really good. If I decide to get a bigger quadcopter, I'll get a nicer set that fits well.  This micro quad only flies for about 3 minutes before the battery needs to be changed, so the bad fit around the nose isn't a big deal.

Took some getting used to, flying while looking at the FPV camera view in the screen or the goggles. It's pretty durable and the cowls around the props let it just bump off of things, but eventually, one or more of the motor struts will break. Fortunately the replacement parts are cheap and on Amazon Prime.  I got a carbon-fiber stiffener that snaps onto the motors and that has so far greatly increased its durability, without noticeably affecting flight or battery life.  I still crash a lot after just 2 weeks.  :crai: There are several upgrades for the frame all the way up to an elaborate aluminum/carbon fiber model. Motor upgrades, too, which you'll need for the heavier AL/CF frame.

It's a lot of fun to fly around indoors, or even around the front or back of the house if the wind is calm. I should take it down to the park nearby. But then I'm quickly going to want to get a bigger, faster quad, like these:

Try not to get obsessed with them. I live in a beautiful rural area on a small lake, very private. So private that occasionally being naked outdoors was okay. My neighbour could soak her arthritic bones in her outdoor hot tub. Lots of birds around.

Then my other neighbour got into drones.

No fine day is free from the incessant whining of what amounts to a flying video camera. It scares the birds. It intrudes on our privacy. I went out early one morning in my housecoat to empty the compost and found him up the biggest tree in our yard, 3m from my doorstep, trying to retrieve one of them from the highest branches.

I understand the appeal. I'd like to use one myself.

You betcha. I can see myself buying a shotgun at some point.

(I wonder if it's legal to use said shotgun on the owners of drones)

i mainly fly in public parks or around the house with chinywoop

lots of fun
chinywoop (eachine e010 with 25mw cam/tx) about $30-40 to build, great for indoor)
eachine h8 mini no cam/tx $15 (easier to fly indoor without extra weight)
jjrx h8c with 200mw cam/tx about $45 to build (fun outdoor, trouble fighting wind)
zmr250 about $120 to build (havent tested it yet, outside too cold yet, hovers good indoor windy as hell)
for goggles i use quanum cyclops, a liggle big but fit over glasses ($40 + rhcp rx antenna $5)

no recording gear yet, maybe sometime soon

a buddy uses goggles to record his inductrix and runcam on bigger frames

Neighbour started out with model planes, which are actually pretty neat. They got bigger and bigger though. So when he got into drones he was primed to fly biggish ones.

Daesh got a thing going dropping grenades from dji's. You could even go all greeny and drop dettol. Not half as much fun though.

I'm idly wondering if an air gun with non-lead ammo could take out toads. Or a shotgun full of rock salt, come to think of it.

Fuck yeah! I know! A spud cannon! A drone armed with a spud cannon would be totally the most awesome fun, and would be guaranteed to fuck toads up big time.  :happydance:

And anyway, frogs are NOT the target. Not even the buggers that think they sound much more impressive if they hang out in the downpipes. Frogs are cool.

The target is Rhinella marina, which is basically the Triceratops of amphibians.

Cane toads would not be much bothered by a paintball gun.

Although, if you had the equipment to manufacture your own "paintballs", or could find something else of decent mass and the right calibre, then a paintball gun could be an effective option.

For example a thicker envelope for added hitting power, combined with a filling of Dettol, should ruin their day.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paintball_equipment#Paintballs

Quote
U.S. SWAT teams often use paintball-like balls, also known as pepper balls, filled with oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient of pepper spray, as a non-lethal incapacitation method. However, pepperballs are shot at a higher velocity than is safe for paintball (above 110 m/s (360 ft/s)) and the shells are not made from gelatin, but rather a frangible plastic to make shots more painful for faster incapacitation. Pepperballs can be shot out of almost any paintball marker.
Those would work on toads. :)

What about a 22 or a pellet gun?

What about a 22 or a pellet gun?

Toads will happily survive most air rifles.

As a kid we'd put out a bowl of Pal then sit up all night picking them off as they came in. One normal pellet gun and one big bastard you could load with bb's or rocks or bolts or whatever. It was amazing how many could suck their guts back in and stagger away before morning.

Just don't like the idea of lead pellets everywhere. And a .22 would be overkill.

The BB and .17 caliber pistols use CO2 cartriges.

I'd bet a paintball gun would work. You're less likely to get in trouble for firing one around the neighborhood (and they're pretty quiet), but it would probably still do some damage to a drone, especially if you store the balls in the freezer. :D

Should read the whole thread first. :p  But freezing paintballs makes them quite a bit more painful.

its been warm enough to fly without freezing any balls

kit took some tweaking, but flies good now
getting some vibrations/resinating at near full throttle, maybe due to unbalanced propellers
prop balancer is on the way

5040 props give much better lift and speed
