Rouge One: (An Antifacist) Star Trek Story

:reign: Warning: there may be spoilers. So if you read this thread and don't want spoilers, do the right thing.
If you are a white supremacist, please do the right thing and boycott this movie.  :stareicide:

Or boldly go and see a movie that has more than just white men.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hasn't even premiered yet, but the film's already getting it from all sides. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that white supremacists intended to boycott the movie because they simply couldn't bear the strain of seeing someone who doesn't look like them up on the big screen (no idea what that feels like). And even if that Reddit-born initiative flails, there's a new hope for the intolerant, as Mashable reports that Donald Trump supporters are calling for a separate boycott over claims that the reshoots were done to shoehorn some anti-Trump scenes. This is complete bullshit, of course, but misinformation or a lack of information never stopped the president-elect, so why would it give his supporters any pause?

Chances are, Trump supporters and maybe even the president-elect himself will find a way to interpret Star Wars' long-established anti-fascism themes as an affront.

I've seen a few alt-righters saying Star Wars is too "communist", lately. And to be fair, I think we all remember the scene where Obi-Wan tells Luke that his destiny is to seize the means of production from the bourgeoisie, and entrust it to a dictatorship of the proletariat.

So here it it folks Rouge One in a nutshell:

An evil space empire is building a super planet killing weapon. A rag-tag bunch of scrappy rebels steal the plans and deliver them to a pretty incompetent princess who puts them into a trash can robot before getting captured by the evil empire and imprisoned in the super planet killing weapon. Another rag-tag bunch of scrappy rebels frees her and they deliver the plans, but lead the evil empire to rebel's super secret space base. Shortly there after the rebels destroy the super planet killing weapon, and are chased around in the snow a bit, then destroy another super planet killing weapon, and then a third.

You are now caught up. There is also a backstory about a whiny hormonal robot building space racing teen that gets severely burned on a lava planet, but he is never a part of a rag-tag bunch of scrappy rebels, so we can forget about that.

I wish the US had this rag-tag bunch of scrappy rebels...
to save us from the evil Trump empire and his super planet killing weapon, which is his presidential cabinet.

Saw it. Can see how the Nazis would hate it, with all of the fascists speaking with received British accents. Its pretty insulting.

I can't believe how fucking good this movie was. It's 1977 theatrical-release-when-I-was-14-years-old good.  "I want to ride my bike down to the movie theater Saturday and see it again at the dollar matinee" good.

OK, am I the only one who sees the actual problem here?
Who even made the rule that we cannot group ducks and fish together for the simple reason that they are both aquatic? If I want to group them that way and it serves my purpose then I can jolly well do it however I want to and it is still a nested hierarchy and you can't tell me that it's not.

Saw it earlier today and I'm still trying to figure out my thoughts on it. I really enjoyed it, but there's also a large part of me thinking it's really just Star Wars porn and that's what I got off on.

I feel like it's a better movie than the Force Awakens and much more an original story. But I think Force Awakens had a lot more emotional impact. And not just the scene you'd think.

Guess I'll have to see Rogue One again to solidify my feelings.

So I saw it last night. I had avoided all reviews and news of it and kept myself spoiler-free to get as genuine  a first experience as I could.

I liked it. Quite a lot, actually. I came out of the theatre thinking that it was all that TFA should have been. (And it wasn't JUST because of its blatant anti-Trumpism. ;))

Actually that's not it. The actual problem is that the article (and other, similar ones I read online) are not even fake news- They are not news at all.

I mean, if one sets the catchy subject and trending themes aside, what is the actual news reported? Some moron posted something false and stupid on twitter, and other morons responded approvingly.
That's not even the "dog bites man" kind of news. It's the "dog barks at garbage truck" kind of news. It's actual waste of bandwidth.

Anyway, that's a different issue for a different subforum, I think.

The one CG character in the darker set was much better executed than the other.

saw it. it was ok. I appreciated some of the little things they did, like the musical theme that sounded kinda like the star wars theme but with important variations. That was neat. In general, I feel like it was closer to the prequels than to Force Awakens and I'm not sure how I felt about that.

They did, but they overlaid CGI faces from 40 years ago.

I saw it yesterday. Pretty decent. I didn't really see anything particularly political about it, though. Ignoring the part where the Emporer shows up--played by Alec Baldwin--and promises to "make the galaxy great again," and then repeatedly says "bigly" for no reason. That was weird.

I mean, basically that convoy battle was the Iraq War from the insurgents' point of view. You can't not see that as a political piece of film.

I suppose, but if that's an anti-Trump statement, it's pretty indirect.

finally got around to seeing it the other day.  honestly, kinda disappointed.  it was ok, but just ok.  barely ok.  almost not ok.

I never found myself caring that much about the story or characters.  the quality of the acting and writing was just meh.  someone itt mentioned it being star wars porn.  I agree.  I kept wondering if they were trying to get away with 2 hours of references and easter eggs instead of a movie.

I rank it below the force awakens, but still above all three prequels.  all things considered, it was still basically professional quality, as opposed to a high school project with a lot of expensive CG work.
