Yes.  If there's anything that can take a subject you love and make you hate it, grad school is the thing.

(I did particle physics.)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ha ha, I wouldn't have believed that I could fall out of love with Astronomy and Astrophysics, but grad school did it to me.  Luckily, the love came back after a few years, when joy could once again take the place of stress and increasingly idiosyncratic jargon-papers.

Otters, though cute, aren't much of a distraction for me.  I did bring the little dog out to the observatory many times, just to watch her go nuts over the hantavirus-filled field mice scurrying under the wooden walkways, and listen to her bark at the coyotes, and sometimes the cows over the fence.  Otherwise she was a pretty shit helper though.  She would be all bundled up in blankets while I had to go out in -25 Celsius to check the photometer positioning between runs, no encouragement, just blank stares or oblivious sleep.

They're gonna stop paying me as much, so I'm under threat of having a much tighter budget than usual. I'm going to compensate by being a uhaul lesbian.
What's a uhaul lesbian?
Just because you're unique doesn't mean you're useful.

Grad school is garbage. Why am I here

Dem feels. Whatcha enrolled in?

Astronomy & astrophysics. I'm in my "last year" or whatever, and trying desperately to escape. I need to finish some more analysis and then write.

You?

Political science. It's a weird year - Aussies can tack a thesis year "Honours" onto their undergrad. As I finished mine 5 years ago and did postgrad after that, it's even weirder.

It's harder than postgrad was.

You should try being a YouPorn lesbian.  That pays better.

If my budget gets tight enough, sure. I have truly fantastic tits and have been getting very good at snapchat.

How did no one say "pics or it didn't happen"?   ;)

I'm one essay off a perfect semester. I should really do this essay...  But what am I doing instead?

Making lolly bags and price lists for a local sporting event's cafe.

Buying Polaroid film for the sporting event.

Baking muffins... For the sporting event.

Sigh. Otterly procrastinating.

Know what I should do? I should join a roller derby team. Because I definitely have time to do that.

   Roller Derby would be pretty cool.  I'm not tough enough though... I can't take a hit :(

I'm a masochist, so it looks really fun imo. I like getting beaten up.

I did that for a while.

I couldn't see a future for it. I was too cautious, and I didn't want to hit anyone first. Because I wasn't as solid as most players, I would be better off as a jammer/pivot - lighter and faster. Unfortunately they have to hit first to break through the pack, I just couldn't do it.

I took up running instead.

Derby is fun! Just make sure to check your self preservation thoughts at the door. And get good quality knee pads, I think mine were ~160$.

My youngest daughter did roller derby for a couple years. It's a high injury sport but looks like a ton of fun.
Love is like a magic penny
if you hold it tight you won't have any
if you give it away you'll have so many
they'll be rolling all over the floor

Lol. On the contrary it's gay as heck and I think I would get a lot of dates!

But also, there's a pretty substantial number of trans women on the derby teams in the Toronto area; maybe I'd get some attention but I wouldn't be dealing with it alone.

Derby teams generally up there on the supersafe spectrum for LGBTIQ peeps. The main reason I joined was I'd just had a very messy domestic breakup with my then-gf. I was working in a very Herero-normative government role, but even my les "friends" in the corporate sphere were hell critical of me. I trained co-ed, so there was a real mix on the spectrum. It was good as far as chill community goes.

But you know.... If you play, you need a derby name!!!! :D got any early ideas?
