I'm still not joining in, but raven sure knows how to pick themes that tempt me.

You know what I'm thinking.
2
nor would most of the central valley.

lolnope.
3
You know what to do.
4
I'm actually thinking about moving one of these days, but have my eye on blue areas east of Sacto.
5
though I share your lol at the inclusion of San Diego and silicon valley.

it's state border gerrymandering. You don't kick all the liberals out. You just kick out enough that you can control the politics.

A port and the tech heart of the state.

SF and the East Bay would benefit from businesses fleeing new Cal but the residents of SF and Oakland in particular don't want more gentrification.
6
It seems almost inevitable, though.

Progressive democracy --> racist President --> Government shutdown

Feinstein on Trump Statements
Jan 12 2018
Washington--Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today released the following statement on President Trump's comments:

"President Trump's vile comments about Africa and Haiti are despicable and beneath the dignity of the presidency. They unquestionably diminish our country's standing in the world.

"America's greatness is enshrined in the words written on the Statue of Liberty: 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.' It's been said that America is an idea. That idea is rooted in the belief that people from all over the world could come here, whether they were fleeing persecution, poverty, or war, or simply looking for a better life for themselves and their families.

"The president's expressed desire to see more immigrants from countries like Norway must be called out for what it is: an effort to set this country back generations by promoting a homogenous, white society.

"The president's words make the jobs of Americans stationed all over the world harder--soldiers, diplomats and businesses. Hate crimes against Muslims, Jews, LGBT individuals and other minorities have increased over the past two years. White nationalism, which led to the death of a peaceful protestor in August, is on the rise.

"We all need to stop pretending that there are no consequences when the most powerful person in the world espouses racist views and gives a wink and a nod to the darkest elements in our society.

"If the president can't control himself and lead this country with the authority, dignity and leadership it requires, then he shouldn't be the president. There's no room for racism in the Oval Office."

Such a tiny program to go after, and there's nothing potentially magnificent to the MAGA crowd about it being axed, especially with the noise about the opioid addiction crisis.  Maybe they could have just replaced "evidenced based" in the program's name?

I kind of loved wonder woman
Me too.  I generally am minimally impressed by superhero movies. Wonder Woman definitely broke that mold

I finally got around to watching The Circle last night.  It was disappointing.

has there been any real analysis of the impact of "russian bots"? like can we measure it and control for the reaction to hype trains like this sans bot influence.

There are probably ongoing experiments re measuring. I don't think either of the main social media platforms are trying to algorithmically control bot-traffic in real time.
18
Russian bots are taking an interest in pushing Oprah presidential speculation.

he Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Monday unanimously rejected a proposal by Energy Secretary Rick Perry that would have propped up nuclear and coal power struggling in competitive electricity markets.

The independent five-member commission includes four people appointed by President Trump, three of them Republicans. Its decision is binding.

At the same time, the commission said that it shared Perry's stated goal of strengthening the "resilience" of the electricity grid and it directed regional transmission operators to provide information to help the commission examine the matter "holistically." The operators have 60 days to submit materials. At that time the agency can issue another order.

That'll help with coal country economic anxiety.

Interesting article about how this year has played out for rural Democrats (mostly transplants) and Republicans. Mistrust, viewing most or all cross-divide ordinary interactions as fraught with animus, and a shrinking interest in trying to find common ground are the themes.

Genetic analysis of 11,500-year-old DNA from an infant found at the Upward Sun River archaeological site in Interior Alaska is evidence of a previously unknown population of ancient people in North America. The researchers - whose findings were published January 3, 2018 in the journal Nature - have named the new group "Ancient Beringians."
