So this is still going on, and is still fucking funny to watch. The Brexiteers still don't understand that they no longer have an empire. They seem think that it's still the 19th century, and that the EU is one of the colonies and will do what the UK wants it to do.

without bothering to read any articles, let me guess:  they are still trying to have it both ways.  they want the advantages of membership without the costs.

eta: and, like you say, they don't have the leverage to pull it off
Yup, you got it.
Truth is out of style

The Brexiteers-in-chief will be quite happy to fall out with no deal, a crashed economy just means they can swoop in and pick up more for their money when things get bad.  Plus they still get to avoid the EU crackdown on tax evasion and money laundering (which is probably what triggered the whole thing in the first place), which might have remained an issue for them if there was a deal for SM access.

Brexit as a bid to destabilize the British economy in order to open British assets to kleptocrats makes a disturbing amount of sense.

So the "impact assessments" that the govt have been going on about for the last year ... turns out they don't exist*.

* or are simply so bad that they'd rather look like a bunch of utter morons than release them.

Mr Davis said the usefulness of such assessments would be "near zero" because of the scale of change Brexit is likely to cause.
having done quite a bit of policy analysis, I can vouch for this sentiment. Not that they shouldn't have tried, but the results would be pretty useless.
