General Discussion / Re: home buying advice

Paying every two weeks as opposed to once a month reduces your length of mortgage paying way more than you might think.

Also look into a 15 year mortgage instead of 30.  Yes, it increases your monthly payment but you save a ton in interest in the long run.

On our current house we actually did a short sale and used the seller's agent.  It was a pain in the ass, the agent said she'd probably never do that again. It worked for us.

Corner lots suck to mow.

Pools don't really add value, and are a maintenance hassle (but my kid loved when we had a pool). Neighborhood with a community pool is an awesome option if you have neurotypical teenagers.

One would think the CFO would know who the Treasurer was.

Double spaces after periods are hard wired for me.

Nope. You can't even acknowledge your shitty behaviour, in the thread you committed it. Cowardly, that is.
My saving agriculture thread is for talking about saving agriculture, not about making big long posts about how wonderful a particular poster is.
Starting a thread doesn't convey ownership.  Discussions go where they go. You have no right to control the conversation just because you started a thread.

Technical Issues and Questions / Re: Malware?
Page numbers are meaningless without knowing your posts-per-page setting.

Why would a libertarian want to protect your famile, freedom, finances and future???
He's not really a Libertarian. He's the Transhumanist guy.

Speaking of which, it's high time this thread was moved to its proper home in ARSE.
Self-quoting soliloquies have no place in an actual science discussion forum.
Done.

Heh, the Green party convention is going on in Houston, and I had no idea.

I wonder if I can get some Zoltan shirts printed up and go hang out.

What is the record for nested self-quotes?

Politics and Current Events / Re: Facebook
I signed up for NextDoor a year ago or so, but that's been pretty drama free.  My neighborhood's FB groups are hilarious.  Someone created a  "You can't say that in [neighborhood[" group because of the drama and admin actions in the original group.

My neighborhood is actually it's own city, and some crazy lady ran for city council (and lost) and she's become complete unhinged lately.

Facebook neighborhood groups are amazing.

tbf, I get the impression that many if not most Trumpublicans use the term, 'liberal', to describe anyone left of themselves,  anyone who thinks Obama was a better president than Trump, pretty much all Democrats and pretty much all the mainstream news media.
Yeah, in the US it has become a pejorative used by Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, and MAGAbots to label anyone who doesn't like Trump.
Predates Trump.   The first time someone called me a "Liberal" in that way was in 2011.

True. That's the current definition.  Prior to Trump it was "..anyone who doesn't hate Obama"

Here is a better analogy.  The "world" decides that a bit of land is now going to belong to a certain people but there are already people living there that have been there for centuries and Jesus Christ what is the point, this shit shouldn't need to be explained anymore
Well if you're talking about Israel/Palestine as a whole, yeah I sorta get it. If you're talking about what city I put my embassy in, I'm missing some of the nuance.

Ok say I live in DC, and I love the Washington Wizards and hate the Knicks (and all the dirty Jews that live in NYC).

Say that Russia decides to move it's embassy from DC to NYC. Why do I care? I'm not a Russian citizen, why do I give a fuck where some powerful foreign country puts it's embassies and consulates?

21
Well the embassy move in Israel is going great, or does that belong in a different thread?

Then again how many gunshot wounds do innercity paramedics get in the US?

Nobody knows because the government isn't allowed to track those statistics.
