General Discussion / Re: home buying advice
This is based on experience, i.e. on mistakes we made  :blushing: :

Let a qualified builder inspect the house. This is money well spent.

Try to find out what the neighbours are like.
In our case, they were ready to sue us before they even knew what we were planning to do - they wanted to make sure that the new corrugated iron roof would not be silver "because they would be blinded by the glare" (we had already decided on dark blue Colorbond).
The house is on a slope, and we had to reinforce a garden wall close to the neighbours. They alerted the heritage authority because they suspected that on their side was a "heritage species" of shrub, and the reinforcement works would damage its roots. The shrub turned out not to be "heritage", and it would not suffer from the construction works. But by the time the council found time to look at their complaint, the renovation had been delayed for weeks.

Don't trust the plans submitted by the real estate agent. We did, and only much later we found out that the land registry's plans showed that parts of the house were built on council land. Fortunately, the council couldn't care less; back in the day when the village was built no exact plans existed, and most houses have a corner built on what is now council land.
yet another Tasmanian attempt to scare off the tree-changers from the mainland; it won't work

No one else reads my posts, so why would Google? :v:
Excellent question
if you press them to compromise, I'm sure they'd be willing to allow non-whites to count for 3/5 of a vote
Kangaroo steaks.  Pell is Australian (and an utter, utter shitbag).
Why do I suspect that 5% of men being virgins at 25 is in no way historically unprecedented?

groundwater contamination by PFOS / PFAS fire retardants is a growing issue around air force and other sites in this part of the world too - e.g. at Williamtown air base at Newcastle, north of Sydney

It took Juntunen just 30 minutes to pull the hard drives out of the copiers. Then, using a forensic software program available for free on the Internet, he ran a scan - downloading tens of thousands of documents in less than 12 hours.

The results were stunning: from the sex crimes unit there were detailed domestic violence complaints and a list of wanted sex offenders. On a second machine from the Buffalo Police Narcotics Unit we found a list of targets in a major drug raid.

The third machine, from a New York construction company, spit out design plans for a building near Ground Zero in Manhattan; 95 pages of pay stubs with names, addresses and social security numbers; and $40,000 in copied checks.

But it wasn't until hitting "print" on the fourth machine - from Affinity Health Plan, a New York insurance company, that we obtained the most disturbing documents: 300 pages of individual medical records. They included everything from drug prescriptions, to blood test results, to a cancer diagnosis. A potentially serious breach of federal privacy law

Science / Re: Seagoing Neandertals?

Did Algis ever propose swimmy Neanderthals?
Of course he did.

The godfather of squishy ape theorists, Marc Verhaegen, postulated that Neanderthals used their large noses as snorkels; I am not making this up...
