That same day, Facebook confirmed that it has been keeping texting and call logs for millions of people who use Android phones to access Facebook Messenger,
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna860006

Can someone explain how they got access to those call logs? I'd think calling information wouldn't be something Facebook could access.

Also, fuck Facebook with a rusty razor.

Science / Status of disease eradication programs
Polio eradication:
22 wild cases, 96 vaccine-derived cases in 2017, down from an estimated 400,000 in 1980. Only four countries currently have cases: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and the DRC.

Dracunculiasis eradication:
30 cases in 2017, down from nearly a million in 1989. Only two countries currently have cases: Ethiopia and Chad.

We're surprisingly close to getting rid of two major infectious diseases.

Politics and Current Events / United is still shit
https://nypost.com/2018/03/13/dog-dies-after-united-flight-attendant-forces-it-into-overhead-bin/
Quote
The Points Guy reports that during their flight, an attendant insisted that the woman put her dog, which was held in a TSA-approved pet carrier, in an overhead bin for the rest of the flight.

Passengers heard barking during the flight, but didn't learn that the dog had died until the flight was over.

"There was no sound as we landed and opened his kennel," passenger June Lara writes in a Facebook post. "There was no movement as his family called his name. I held her baby as the mother attempted to resuscitate their 10 month old puppy."

The leaders of the Women's March have been linked to Louis Farrakhan multiple times in the past (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/01/opinion/womens-march-progressives-hate.html)

This blew up again last week, when Jake Tapper attended Farrakhan's Savior's Day address. Thread:

including quotes like "the mother and father of apartheid, the Jews." and "God did not create man to lay with man. But you are being chemically programmed against your nature, you don't know it."

He specifically pointed out that Women's March co-chair Tamika Mallory attended.

The day after Tapper's tweet, she tweeted this:

Many people took it as a response. The first tweet that seems unequivocally on point came a day after the first one:

The problem is that in her defense, the guy she retweeted also said this:

As far as I can tell, she has yet to condemn Farrakhan's statements. The closest she has come is this:

(with no followup statement actually condemning antisemitism or homophobia)

Other leaders, including Linda Sarsour and Carmen Perez (both referenced by Tamika Mallory here: https://twitter.com/TamikaDMallory/status/970020882293944320) have been challenged to condemn Farrakhan's statements; the latter (who seems to tweet rarely) only posted this in direct response:

while Linda Sarsour (who tweets often) had multiple tweets supporting Tamika Mallory...including this one:
(read the thread above for context)

And of course, Farrakhan pins this tweet in response to the whole thing:

Interesting times.

Politics and Current Events / CPAC shit
So uh

A spokesman for CPAC just explicitly said that the RNC chose Michael Steele as chairman because he was black.

Been trying to find a list of RNC members in 2009 to see if this was firsthand knowledge or not.

Technical Issues and Questions / Search ignores posts
I searched for Calhoun on TR, and only managed to find the post I made today, even though I managed later to find old posts with the name - even on the same subforum (ARSE). Now when I search, I find some old posts - though not all of them.

Any idea why?

Politics and Current Events / More NSA bullshit
https://www.politico.com/amp/story/2018/01/19/nsa-deletes-surveillance-data-351730

Quote
However, the NSA told U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in a filing on Thursday night and another little-noticed submission last year that the agency did not preserve the content of internet communications intercepted between 2001 and 2007 under the program Bush ordered. To make matters worse, backup tapes that might have mitigated the failure were erased in 2009, 2011 and 2016, the NSA said.

https://www.politico.com/interactives/2017/obama-hezbollah-drug-trafficking-investigation/

Quote
In its determination to secure a nuclear deal with Iran, the Obama administration derailed an ambitious law enforcement campaign targeting drug trafficking by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah, even as it was funneling cocaine into the United States, according to a POLITICO investigation.

...

Lebanese arms dealer Ali Fayad, a suspected top Hezbollah operative whom agents believed reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a key supplier of weapons to Syria and Iraq, was arrested in Prague in the spring of 2014. But for the nearly two years Fayad was in custody, top Obama administration officials declined to apply serious pressure on the Czech government to extradite him to the United States, even as Putin was lobbying aggressively against it.

Fayad ... was ultimately sent to Beirut. He is now believed by U.S. officials to be back in business, and helping to arm militants in Syria and elsewhere with Russian heavy weapons.

...

And when Project Cassandra agents and other investigators sought repeatedly to investigate and prosecute Abdallah Safieddine, Hezbollah's longtime envoy to Iran, whom they considered the linchpin of Hezbollah's criminal network, the Justice Department refused, according to four former officials with direct knowledge of the cases.

Long exposé at Politico claiming that the Obama administration effectively sacrificed a huge investigation which could have done a lot to stop Hezbollah for the Iran deal. Still working through it.

Politics and Current Events / Saudi Arabia purge?
Anyone have a clue what's going on? I'm seeing a lot of speculation about a purge of the "old guard" related to the late king, including the recent arrests, but not much more concrete.

Any way to look at messages you've sent? All I could find was messages to me. I could start including myself as a recipient, but that would be rather annoying to remember.

On my computer, I'm receiving a dns_probe_finished_nxdomain error for talkrational.org. Isup.me said TR was up several times, but once said it was down. I flushed the DNS cache, and it still doesn't work. TR is still working on my phone, though.

That was in 1997. After, Tampa Electric wrote special guidelines so another accident like it would never happen again.

Then two decades later, almost to the day, five workers were killed, burned to death performing a near-identical job at the utility's Big Bend Power Station in June.

If Tampa Electric had followed the guidelines, the men would still be alive.

The Justice Department has committed to ending a controversial Obama-era program that discourages banks from doing business with a range of companies, from payday lenders to gun retailers.

...

Under President Barack Obama, the department said the effort was intended to root out fraud by banks and payment processors and to cut off the banking system from wrongdoing by merchants.

...

But Republicans in Congress have argued that the program hindered banks from serving legitimate businesses and tried to get officials to back off by using legislation and investigative powers.

The head of the Michigan health department was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter, the highest-ranking member of Gov. Rick Snyder's administration to be snagged in a criminal investigation of Flint's lead-contaminated water.

Nick Lyon is accused of failing to alert the public about an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Flint area, which has been linked by some experts to poor water quality in 2014-15. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Lyon also is charged with misconduct in office for allegedly obstructing university researchers who are studying if the surge in cases is linked to the Flint River.

http://www.skeptic.com/reading_room/conceptual-penis-social-contruct-sokal-style-hoax-on-gender-studies/

Quote
"The Conceptual Penis as a Social Construct" should not have been published on its merits because it was actively written to avoid having any merits whatsoever. The paper is academically worthless nonsense. The question that now needs to be answered is, "How can we restore the reliability of the peer-review process?"

On the other hand (as seems criminally undermentioned, though mentioned in the original article), it was rejected from the initial journal, which recommended this pay-to-publish journal under the same imprimatur (Taylor & Francis). So this is, at most, an indictment of pay-for-publish and of Taylor & Francis, not of the entire subject (as many people sharing it seem to think).
