Pedestrian Bridge Collapse in Miami. Fatalities reported.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/miami-pedestrian-bridge-collapses-trapping-unknown-number-people-n857011

The bridge was meant to more safely connect Florida International University with the community on the other side of the expressway.

The bridge was installed on Saturday.  The construction method was...novel.

It was built and designed by MCM in partnership with FIGG Bridge Engineers

What does that mean exactly?  Are either of those notorious for being shitty bridge builders?

Someone just showed me an article saying they put it up in only six hours?

Maybe they should have taken at least seven.

Are you sure that's just not the time it took to get the already completed bridge in place?

They built the span pieces on the ground and then on Saturday craned them onto the supports.

I'm aware.  My post would not have made any sense if I wasn't aware of that.

Yes.

There was one in Nottingham as well, but it's still there:

It looks like the truss failed, rather than the piers.

I'm pretty sure it was the time to put in place since I said "put it up" and instead of "build it". I could have been clearer I guess.

ACtually from this photo it looks like a sheer failure at the pier:

Well, in that case 6 hours does not really seem like too little of an amount of time.

I've been seeing tweets claiming they were stress-testing it.

While cars drove under it.

Looks like it should have had temporary supports until they built the suspension structure.  Looks like they forgot that part.

Well my first thought that it must be a bending failure in the truss, but that seemed unlikely because engineers know how to specify trusses.  And then I saw that it looked like a shear failure at the pier.  But if the truss was designed to be suspended, then it could be both.

wtf?

With the Nottingham one, the entire suspension system was moved into place overnight with the tramway.  We were driving under it the next day.

What else is weird is that that truss is obviously not a normal truss.  The members that are in line with what would eventually be the tension cables from the mast would have to act in compression while it has to act as a beam before the cables are place.  Once the cables are attached, they'd change to being in tension.

I think.

Yep.

I think the truss sort of thingy was just architectural except that it carried the line of the suspension cables down to the lower deck. That's why the odd angles of the struts.

Yeah.  Looking at the video, it looks like the failure occured at the point at deck level that should have been supported by the first cable on the from the mast.

Yep, you can see it buckling there.

Somebody is going to get in a lot of trouble. This was a completely avoidable event. The dead load of the structure was massive, I mean, how many people were going to be on it at one time, maybe a 100 or even 200. That's perhaps 20 tons vs the 960 tons dead load and would have made no difference. They shouldn't even have put it up without bracing supports unless they had the cables installed. They didn't even have the mast for the cables built much less the cables available. It's actually surprising the bugger didn't collapse right off.

More armchair enginerding.

Seems failure may have occured during post-tensioning.
