Facebook records your call logs
Quote
That same day, Facebook confirmed that it has been keeping texting and call logs for millions of people who use Android phones to access Facebook Messenger,
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna860006

Can someone explain how they got access to those call logs? I'd think calling information wouldn't be something Facebook could access.

Also, fuck Facebook with a rusty razor.

Same.

I'm not surprised and suspected as much and should've known better, but fuck those assholes.

eta google's just as bad but I literally can't get rid of all of the google apps on my phone because it will not let me uninstall, and every time i try to delete all of the data on the youtube or maps app, it just resets and pulls everything from my google account anyway, so it's literally pointless

I want to get rid of Google but it's hard. My email is still Google and I need to do a lot of work to get done with it.

Yeah, I suspected something similar when I read a math tumblr once, and the next day Facebook suggested them to me.

I've never met the person, they're in a slightly related field at most, I have no friends in common with them. I also wasn't logged into facebook, hadn't used facebook on my phone in at least months, and never had downloaded the facebook app.

Read this whole thread. Just went through and updated some shit on Windows 10 that I didn't realize was still fucking enabled.

Hrm. Many of those are things I thought people would understand were being harvested - of course Google is recording your entire google history, and of course Facebook has your whole facebook message history.

The chrome shit (extensions and how often you use them) is creepy, but if I remember correctly, is explicitly asked when you log in.

Similarly, the device list on facebook is used as a method to "detect someone trying to hack in". I've logged into facebook and been tested because I used a new computer; they have to store at least some of that information to be able to test that.

But having access to something entirely unrelated to facebook goes very, very far over the line for me.

Right, but it's insane when you look at the whole dataset they can have for just a single person, and some of these things are a little more than you'd expect. I'm constantly turning location services off and on because even though I want to use my map when I need driving directions, I don't want my phone tracking my every move and recording exactly where I go. I have no choice but to use Google calendar for my school calendar because that's how they give us our schedules. I put in extra meetings/events in there as a matter of convenience. But I don't want Google tracking which meetings I go to and how long I stay and when I arrived and when I left.

As for the rest, they are misleading people. When you go to delete an email or file and the system prompt asks if you're sure you want to permanently delete it, then you, as a reasonable person, would not expect Google to keep that shit in your mega-database-file-of-doom for 10 years.

If you use Google Maps on iOS (and who doesn't?), it will send your location to the mothership for archiving while you are using the app, and it will continue to do so in the background if you don't explicitly dismiss it.

Lovely, it was something asked for.  Why the fuck was it asked for?

And how, exactly, does facebook access it? Does it get the information from your phone, from the companies, or what? If the former, why is your phone sending that data? If the latter, why is your company releasing that data?

It (Facebook Messenger) gets the information by becoming the app you use to make phone calls and send text messages, taking over for the dialer/contacts and messaging apps that came with your phone. It does a lot more than just let Facebook users chat with each other.

Oh.

That's quite different from what I thought it was.

Hm, I know for sure that I declined that because I remember a version of that prompt. I also never entered my phone number into my Facebook profile, though having the app on my phone means they have my number anyway, I'm sure. Wondering if call and text logs are in my data, but I haven't downloaded it to check yet.

Too far?

*sigh* fuck it.

I guess I'll just go the other direction and get facebook on everything I can, install Alexa and Google Home inside my house, mount webcams in every room and leave them uncovered and start surfing porn without using incognito mode.

Just go all in.

It's actually a small consolation to think that my Grandpa Simpson angry yelling at technology as if the engineers can hear me may actually have had someone listening on the other end whose feelings I could potentially hurt.

Depends on the person, but it's useful to organize people for events for me. It also acts as a kind of passive way to keep up with people socially.

It's also overrun with so much utter shit that I pretty much only use it for those events.

Well, you are like 90, so there are a lot of things that people below the age of 90 find appealing that are going to be difficult to explain to you.

Facebook is how my class communicates - deadline reminders, shared files/study notes, announcements, requests for help, apartment listings, pet sitting jobs, etc. and most importantly, custom made memes before every exam.

The world is currently run by cartoon villains:

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/05/facebook-building-8-explored-data-sharing-agreement-with-hospitals.html

Quote
Facebook has asked several major U.S. hospitals to share anonymized data about their patients, such as illnesses and prescription info, for a proposed research project. Facebook was intending to match it up with user data it had collected, and help the hospitals figure out which patients might need special care or treatment.

The proposal never went past the planning phases and has been put on pause after the Cambridge Analytica data leak scandal raised public concerns over how Facebook and others collect and use detailed information about Facebook users.

Quote
While the data shared would obscure personally identifiable information, such as the patient's name, Facebook proposed using a common computer science technique called "hashing" to match individuals who existed in both sets. Facebook says the data would have been used only for research conducted by the medical community.

The project could have raised new concerns about the massive amount of data Facebook collects about its users, and how this data can be used in ways users never expected.

nope nope nope nope nope nope

eta what makes me extra mad about this is that this information is easily accessible to doctors if they would take the time to fucking talk to patients and ASK THEM QUESTIONS.

Interesting read https://blog.harvardlawreview.org/facebook-cambridge-analytica-and-the-regulators-dilemma-clueless-or-venal/

Quote
All of this leads back to the question whether Facebook is a venal company that warrants especially harsh treatment from regulators. Facebook now has three strikes against it: Beacon, the privacy modifications it made in 2009 to force private user information public, and now the Kogan/Cambridge Analytica revelation. Facebook can't claim to be clueless about how this happened. The FTC consent decree put Facebook on notice. All of Facebook's actions were calculated and deliberate, integral to the company's business model, and at odds with the company's claims about privacy and its corporate values. So many of the signs of venality are present.
