Default Making reports public

membership poll here:

http://talkrational.org/showthread.php?t=46969

this thread isn't dealing with the forum known as "post reports and private feedback", that forum will remain open for at least the "private feedback" area, and no changes have been proposed.

that's a pretty bad poll

1) keep reports private
2) make all reports public
3) make reports public unless the user requests the report to be private
4) make reports dealing with anything but harassment public; harassment related reports will remain private or the user may request that it remain private

are we missing any of the popular suggestions from the thread?

well the way it is now is not really "private" it's "default private, OP can request the thread be made public at any time and we comply"

I think that's an important distinction to show that we as staff members have absolutely no expectation of privacy when it comes to posting in a report thread started by a member.

make staff member reports public is a big suggestion.

the other big one was giving the reporter the option to make it public or private when they make the report.

lana you've already voted, are you ok if i change option 2 to this:

Staff moves reports dealing with anything but harassment in public thread; harassment related reports will remain private or the user may request that it remain private

also i think it's obvious but if a staff member wants to make a report that concerns a private issue of harassment against the staff member or on behalf of another member we will keep that private too, but i figured that was implied by keeping the private feedback forum.

Seems like the bit about policy discussions/decisions happening in public is missing from this somehow. It's not that the whole thread has to be moved if it's against the reporters' wishes for it to be private, but the policy part certainly needs to be moved or copied.

I'm not sure what the proposal is here. If we're going to vote on something, we should actually have a complete proposal written out that explains all the details.

ETA: I hate it when we have these vague policy polls predicated on dozens of pages of discussion somewhere else. We should never vote on a proposal unless it's crystal clear what the proposal actually is, and we can't just point to some discussion elsewhere as if that clarifies the proposal. All this does is make for vague policy, and that means that the policy will just become whatever an actor's recollection of her impression of the policy was. It's a mess.

I didn't think this was the poll for changing the policy. figured it was for sparking ideas about what should be included.

well maybe that's another option. though i think that is the rule right now, any policy discussions should be moved to public.

this is why i avoided making the poll.

i'm just trying to narrow shit down, that's why you can vote for multiple options.

Yeah, once there is a general idea for the direction we're going, then someone writes the actual rule and we discuss it in detail

Voting is just part of it, I think. This is where we need discussion so we have a clear idea how to draft something for ratification.

well obviously no one really wants to "keep it the same," and that definitely is consistent with membership vote.

staff reports being public automatically also seems to be pretty straightforward.

my favorite option is probably something like: all non harassment/bwrv type stuff is automatically public (splits, derails, etc), other stuff (direct complaints about another poster, harassment, bwrvs etc) is not automatically public

I agree that the default should be for reports to be public, but I disagree that staff reports should necessary be public in all circumstances. I think that reports should be public by default, but that anyone (staff or nonstaff) should be able to make a private report when they feel that the circumstances warrant it. I don't like the idea that these private reports could shift to PM, and I would like to see a rule banning the kind of PM discussions that we've been hearing about between the admins. I don't feel that the need for total transparency otherwise outweighs the need to have some exceptional reports private, though total privacy (e.g., via PM) is very problematic IMO.

it was a preliminary poll to figure out which parts should be included in a new policy.

what do you think?

I think that it should be an option to be public or private. with the default set to public.

that one's dumb.

right now the second option seems to make the most sense, with the fifth option also being implemented, based on both this poll and member feedback

we could probably pay a developer to modify the code so that the reporter can specify whether a report goes to a private or public forum. It would not be a simple change.

It seems to me that having the option to start a private thread and make a manual report that way is functionally equivalent, or close enough.
