Default The cool science image thread

We had this somewhere, IIDB? Here? Don't remember. Anyway, it's a thread to post cool science images in, and then ooh and aah. Here's one:

Io orbiting Jupiter.

great pic, galaxies everywhere.
Sagan uses that same image to demostrate universal scale in The Varieties of Scientific Experience,.

Which doesn't seem impressive until you realize he died about eight years before that image was made.

Edit: Poor resolution counterbalanced by sheer awesome. Starfish Prime as seen from around ground level.

Big bada boom.

Edit: Do mathematics count? This is the best fractal.

The best fractal. And puffins are the best birds.

Next, a bouquet of diatoms:

They probably don't actually smell very good.

Next, some sorta sprinkler.

Sprinklers are science. Navier and Stokes said so.

Man, all of these images are really small and unimpressive. Of course, I'm assuming everyone's already seen all of those stupendous Cassini images, all those photos of spacewalks over Earth and stuff, all those mushroom clouds with condensation rings. So here's a grainy image of what a cat sees, as reconstructed from a recording of neuron activity in the geniculate nucleus (which is where Richter fought Quaid, IIRC). The top row is video frames, the bottom is reconstructions.

Question: does anyone here not yet know what Čerenkov radiation looks like? Or what it's analogous to?

Another question: Is the JET still cool? I know everyone's making a big deal about the LHC, but I like the JET. It looks nifty, too.

fractal doesn't show after clicking show.

Hubble deep field is like the holy grail picture. And this one, of course:

Indeed.

Correction. His missus selected that to go in the collection, along with a bunch of other Hubble ST stuff. Pedant.

Wow, I don't know whether that's the best fractal, but it's certainly the biggest!

You're right, except I think you'd call the lumplet a seed. *hint* You would use these together.
